HIAS is the global Jewish nonprofit organization that protects refugees—including women and children, and ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities—whose lives are in danger for being who they are.
HIAS is an international nonprofit organization with a vision for a world in which refugees, displaced persons and asylum seekers find welcome, safety and freedom. HIAS operation in Kenya was established in 2002 with the mission to serve the most vulnerable refugees through protection, resilience, economic inclusion and provision of durable solutions.
Organizationally, HIAS is guided by its Refugee Rights Framework. This rights-based approach, based on international human rights, humanitarian and refugee law and practice, provides a programming framework for HIAS’ focus on refugee protection. This framework prioritizes programming impact that ensures forcibly displaced people realize their potential and become contributors to society, with this impact being achieved through the realization of legal and civil rights and social and economic rights including through 1) the right to protection from harm, violence and discrimination, 2) the right to recovery from the shock of displacement, and 3) the right to economic self-sufficiency and inclusion. The vision of the HIAS Kenya office is a world where refugees find welcome, safety and freedom.
The overall goal of HIAS’ global GBV Prevention and Response programming is for forcibly displaced women and girls and LGBTQ-identified refugees to pursue their potential and to access their human and legal rights, free from violence and oppression. This means HIAS GBV programming works to ensure;
(1) Forcibly displaced women, girls, and LGBTQ-identified refugees face a reduced risk of GBV,
(2) Survivors of sexual and physical violence have access to coordinated psychosocial, health, and legal services,
(3) Family, community, and institutions support women, girls, and LGBTQ-identified refugees in accessing and using their rights.
HIAS Kenya is seeking a Primary Prevention Specialist to support a multi-year body of work using community based transformative approaches to prevent violence against women and girls at multiple levels (national, community, interpersonal), and to ensure survivors have access to quality response services. These efforts will contribute to refugee women and girls facing less interpersonal violence among the urban refugee population in Nairobi. The work is part of HIAS Kenya’s overall GBV Prevention and Response Program and uses a survivor-centered, community-based approach and programs consider the voices, needs of survivors and prioritize their leadership in program design and implementation.
The GBV Primary Prevention Specialist will bring together, civil society organizations, communities, authorities and other partners to challenge and change the social norms that allow violence against women and girls to continue and to ensure HIAS prevention work is linked with survivors’ access to quality response services.
He or she will be required to provide technical oversight and support to GBV staff focused on prevention and to ensure all activities supported are designed and conducted in accordance to HIAS Standards Operating Procedures and within the GBV local and global guidelines. The GBV Primary Prevention Specialist will support specific program components related to social norms, transformative behavior change and other elements that go beyond awareness raising and into the social change needed to ensure women and girls can access their rights.
