Blood Bank - Hemovigilance at Tenwek Hospital

Job Description:

• To ensure that all unethical transfusion events are identified, investigated, reported and corrective actions are made and followed up.

Responsibilities

• Take custody and ensure easy availability to all Hospital staff involved in the transfusion process of all National and Hospital policies, guidelines and standards regarding the practice and transfusion medicine.
• Monitor adherence to cold chain, blood use and discard practices.
• Monitor, train and promote adherence to blood recipient and donor identification policy, counselling procedure, sample collection and labelling procedures.
• Train Clinicians, Nurses and Lab staff on the National transfusion practices.
• Identify areas of possible risk to the transfusion process and institute preventative measures.
• Document and report to transfusion committee, transfusion near misses events.
• Follow up all adverse events investigation and report as required.
• Prepare Monthly reports to Hospital transfusion committee, Hospital Management and Regional blood Centre and ensure retention of original copies.
• Plan and organize blood campaigns in collaboration with Satellite centers.
• Assist blood bank Technologist to accomplish daily section’s work.
• Perform any other task assigned by Laboratory Manager or transfusion Committee.

Qualifications & Experience

• Higher National Diploma or above in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution.
• Registered with Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists board with valid practice license.
• Must have experience in Blood transfusion and Hemovigilance in a busy Hospital Laboratory.
• Ability to manage time.
• Observe Laboratory work ethic.
