    Consultant (Aquaculture Characterization in Kenya)

    Scope of Work

    The role of consultant will be data collection through household surveys according to the schedule outlined by the impact assessment team.

    For carrying out the abovementioned role the consultant is expected to:

    • Submit to WorldFish, a detailed plan of activities to implement this project;
    • Organize multistakeholder workshop on aquaculture hotspots and cold spots together with WorldFish staff;
    • Draft report of multistakeholder workshop on aquaculture hotspots and cold spots in Kenya;
    • Identify relevant areas in three (3) main aquaculture producing zones in Kenya: High production zones, middle production zones and low production zones together with WorldFish;
    • List/obtain list of aquaculture farmers in three (3) main producing zones in Kenya: High production zones (70% of respondents), middle production zones (25% of respondents) and low production zones (5% of respondents);
    • Obtain ethical clearance from relevant Institutional Review Board in Kenya before the commencement of the survey;
    • Carry out data collection up to, but not limited to 5000 household surveys (estimated 45 min. per survey) of selected farmers;
    • Recruit local enumerators for collection of data in selected counties in Kenya;
    • Arrange and facilitate training of enumerators to list farmers in the selected counties (if needed) and conduct household surveys in close collaboration with WorldFish;
    • Locate households from the list of farmers obtained from the list of aquaculture farmers collected;
    • Establish a data quality assurance process and deliver high quality primary datasets from household surveys;
    • Identify lessons learned from the fieldwork exercises and provide a report proposing practical recommendations for WorldFish that may help inform the design and implementation of future surveys;
    • Conduct analysis of the data to give insight to the data (socioeconomic, production and other relevant variables) and provide a report of the analysis of the data obtained;
    • Share data regularly for checking data quality and progress of the project;
    • Maintain effective communication with WorldFish Impact Assessment team throughout the study period;
    • All activities involving people must abide to procedures in accordance with WorldFish Human Research Ethics and local safety measures due to the coronavirus by obtaining informed consent from the study participants before collecting any information;
    • Spatial scope: the fieldwork will be deployed across three (3) main production areas in Kenya;
    • Deliverable timeline: timeline for each output might be subject to adjustments (prior consultation and approval with WorldFish) due to external factors (e.g. insecurity, weather changes, etc);

    Reporting

    The consultant will report the progress of the assignment to WorldFish on monthly basis.

    Skills, Experience and Knowledge

    The Consultant (s) must have the following skills and demonstratable competencies

    • Consultant must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in Aquaculture systems in Kenya.
    • Lead consultant must have a minimum of master’s degree in Aquaculture, Agricultural Economics, and related field.
    • Consultant must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in data collection in aquatic food systems.
    • Consultant team must have strong skills in data analysis.
    • Experience in Geographic Information Systems is an advantage.
