Director of Engineering at Jumia

What you will be doing:

• Lead and manage the engineering team, providing strategic direction, guidance, and mentorship to drive technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration.
• Develop and execute the engineering strategy and roadmap, aligning it with business goals, market trends, and customer needs.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and other stakeholders to define technical requirements, prioritize initiatives, plan and drive the successful delivery of products and solutions.
• Oversee the design, development, and deployment of software applications, ensuring they meet quality, scalability, security, and performance standards.
• Establish and maintain engineering best practices, processes, and methodologies to ensure consistency, efficiency, and quality in software development and delivery.
• Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and learning within the engineering team, empowering individuals to take ownership of their work and contribute to the success of the organization.
• Manage engineering resources, budgets, and timelines, optimizing resource allocation and ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
• Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies, tools, and trends in software development, and make recommendations for technology adoption, investment, and innovation.
• Lead by example, embodying Jumia's values and principles, and inspire others to uphold the highest standards of integrity, innovation, and excellence.

What we are looking for:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; Master's degree or MBA preferred.
• 14+ years of experience in software engineering roles, with 6+ years of experience in engineering leadership or management roles.
• Deep technical expertise in software development, architecture, and engineering principles, with hands-on experience in developing and deploying complex software solutions.
• Ability to collaborate between multiple teams to effectively plan initiatives, identify and mitigate risks and blockers, and deliver high quality solutions for all applications owned
• Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, differentiate and develop high-performing teams and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and complex ideas to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
• Strategic thinking and business acumen, with the ability to understand market dynamics, customer needs, and competitive landscape, and translate them into actionable engineering strategies and initiatives.
• Proven ability to drive results, execute on strategic initiatives, and deliver business impact in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
