    Health & Safety Compliance Officer (AO) MATL Cover

    Main purpose of job:

    • The Health & Safety Compliance Officer will demonstrate professional best practice in health & safety in the workplace through established processes and engagement with staff, promoting a healthy and safe workplace.
    • The Health & Safety Compliance Officer will lead the BHC Nairobi on all compliance checks and documentation compilation to be fully compliant with Kenya & UK Health and Safety standards.  They will provide professional advice and guidance to ensure a compliant estate. They will be the post Fire Safety Manager.
    • They will work closely with Estates colleagues on Health and Safety Communication and Programmes for the British High Commission Nairobi and will work close with the Senior Regional Technical Lead and Technical Works Supervisors in ensuring a safe and compliant Estate.  They will manage a dedicated Health & Safety Budget to delivery their work.

    Roles and responsibilities:

    60% - Health & Safety Compliance

    • Set out a yearly Planned Preventative Maintenance schedule with the technical works team and contractors to ensure full compliance on health and safety checks as per Kenya & UK standards and guidance
    • Update and maintain health and safety check documentation for confirmation of works completed (digital and paper files as required).
    • Set out a yearly schedule of health and safety related communication campaigns to improve awareness and compliance on health and safety procedures at the British High Commission Nairobi
    • Conduct health and safety induction briefings with new starters
    • Act as secretary to the Health and Safety Committee ensuring meetings are held Quarterly, minutes are prepared, and a diverse membership is retained
    • Spot check contractors to ensure they are operating in full compliance with health and safety standards including guiding and approving risk assessments, method statements and issuing permits to work where necessary.
    • Act as the Fire Safety Manager for the BHC Nairobi addressing any fire safety issues with urgency.
    • Coordinate annual medical checks for technical grade staff
    • Actively participate in office-wide event committees, such as Away Days, King’s Birthday Party etc to ensure events are H&S compliant
    • Act as the main point of contact with Head Quarters in the operation delivery of all H&S actions including any new initiatives.
    • Lead investigator on any reported incidents, accidents or near misses as reported on the H&S portal known as Evotix.
    • Support HR team in the investigation and support of any workplace injuries and suitable response in line with insurance cover and the employment act.

    25% - Estates Team Administrative & purchase to pay support

    • Assist the Team on purchase order and credit card payments
    • Cover on office admin in times of leave or when called upon
    • Assists manage visits especially from UK-based visitors.

    15% - Finance & Procurement

    • Manage the health and safety budget ensuring cost savings measures are undertaken to ensure value for money and justified spend for all health & safety purchases
    • Actively participate in budget holder meetings and adhere to forecast deadlines responding to any audit queries
    • Contract manager for any health and safety related contracts valued under £25,000 including drafting terms of reference for new tenders, holding regular KPI review meetings etc.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

    • A general degree with at least a diploma in OSH or a diploma in NEBOSH; or A degree in Occupational Safety and Health
    • Should demonstrate knowledge and ability in conducting OSH audits
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Computer literate
    • Able to work independently within a supportive team

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

    • Fire Safety Certificate
    • Budget management experience
    • Procurement knowledge
