    Intern - Environment Affairs

    Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) as well as the broader branch communications, including website maintenance and copy-writing.

    Under the direct supervision of the Marine and Freshwater Branch’s Strategic Communication and Engagement Expert and Branch Coordination Lead, the intern’s responsibilities will fall within the following activities to support the overall communication, advocacy, and outreach efforts for the GFCR and branch:

    • Support a wide range of communication and outreach needs and content development such as video script writing for public service announcements, web stories, website content management and updates, and social media text;
    • Support development and design of digital and traditional multimedia communications assets, utilizing graphic design and other software as needed;
    • Prepare recommendations for events, newsletter and product content to showcase stories and portfolio impacts;
    • Support social media planning/strategy and execution and, in consultation with the GFCR Global Team, support development and dissemination of content, including visual assets such as social media cards, through media and networks;
    • Compose visual assets, including fact-sheets, presentations, data visualizations, and info graphics, for internal and external use as needed;
    • Liaise with service providers and creative partners;
    • Undertake desktop research and support the development of concept notes;
    • Editing and quality control for communication products;
    • Other duties to support the work of the Branch as requested and in accordance with the Intern's interests.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or Have graduated with a university degree. Applicants must be pursuing qualifications in an area of study that can significantly contribute to the responsibilities outlined and overall work of the Marine and Freshwater Branch, including:
    • Be computer literate in standard software applications (particularly, proficiency using MS Office Suite);
    • Possess high-level English writing skills.
    • Demonstrate organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrate interest in issues related to ecosystems management, restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate change or sustainable development. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
    • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.     Languages

    Wastewater Expert

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The international consultant will:

    • Supporting the inception phase and kick off of the initiative on “Strategies, capacity and data for wastewater and environmental surveillance in Africa”.
    • Supporting the inception phase and kick off of the initiative on “Enhancing Wastewater, Nutrient Management and Sanitation Provision for Marginalized Coastal Communities in Sabah, Malaysia”.
    • Provide specialized support on strategic resource mobilization efforts of the SSPU related with the new project “Preventing and addressing the degradation of freshwater and marine ecosystems from source to sea”.
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Academic Qualifications:

    • A Master’s university degree in development studies, sustainability, environmental science, environmental management, water, wastewater, political science, or another related field is required.
    • Required at least 7 years’ experience working design and implement sustainable wastewater management projects at international level, preferably with experience on inception phase, kick off and/or evaluation of projects or programmes for Multilateral Organizations.
    • Within this experience a minimum of least four (4) years of experience mobilizing resources for UN agencies is desirable"

    Desirable Experience:

    • Knowledge demonstrating experience working on wastewater management, including in Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Malaysia. A strong familiarity with the aims and ambitions of the United Nations Environment Programme, and with its processes and guidelines for project management and resource mobilization. The consultant must demonstrate ambition as a systems-thinker and clearly demonstrate the following competencies: Excellent communication skills. Computer literacy (especially in use of MS Office programs). Strong teamwork, and ability to build relationships.  Excellent research abilities and analytical skills.

    Languages

    • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
