    Associate Professor

    Function Overview:
     
    Launched in 2015, the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) is the premier source of education and tailored training for journalists, communicators and media executives and entrepreneurs in East Africa and beyond.

    Position Overview:
    This full-time position will provide academic leadership for AKU-GSMC’s new Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation. In addition, this role involves teaching, research and community outreach activities

    Responsibilities

    • Design high quality learning experiences for executive masters students.
    • Coordinate two courses as part of the Executive Masters in media Leadership & Innovation.
    • Teach two courses per semester as part of the Executive Masters in Media Leadership & innovation.
    • Work with an Instructional designer to ensure course content is easily accessible and useable on Moodle.
    • Engage in relevant and active research activities to advance the school’s scholarly research agenda in the areas of media leadership and innovation.
    • Maintain a sound and current knowledge and understanding of the field through research, scholarly activities and publications.
    • Contribute to maintaining and extending links between the School and relevant organizations, researchers and practitioners
    Reports to: The Director, Academics, Graduate School of Media and Communications

     

    Requirements
    • A PhD in media innovation or media economics/ leadership or related field, or a PhD in communication/ media studies with background in media leadership and management
    • Internationally renowned expert in the field of media leadership and innovation or related field.
    • At least five (5) years’ experience managing media and/or innovation programs.
    • Outstanding research record and proven experience in fostering an active research culture.
    • Extensive experience in designing, developing executive education (MBA style) programs.
    • Proven experience in fostering high level stakeholder engagement in program development.
    • Excellent conceptual, analytical and communications skills in both oral & written forms.
    • Proficiency in use of related computer software packages
    • Experience of managing media enterprises is a distinct advantage.
    • Experience in developing blended learning courses is highly desirable.
    • Proven ability to mentor faculty and promote research.
    • Self-driven and ability to work with minimum supervision.
    • Ability to work independently and entrepreneurially to envision, create and implement successful programs.
    • Proven ability to interact effectively and credibly with a diversity of clients, senior government officials, faculty, and staff on the appropriate design, development, and delivery of programs.
    • Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills
    • Excellent organizational and administrative skills and a track record of successful project management.

    Lecturer/Senior Instructor

    Position Overview:

    This is a teaching and research position to support the Master of Arts in Digital Journalism programme. The position holder must embrace cutting-edge technologies to enable them lead our digital media production in preparing students for the rapidly changing media landscape. Extensive professional experience in the production of video and other multimedia content for journalistic purposes is required.

    Responsibilities

    • Plan, design, develop and teach courses in multimedia storytelling, visual journalism, advanced reporting practices and issues and/or other courses related to journalism in emerging media in both PDCE and MADJ
    • Effectively integrate new technologies and multi-media innovations into curriculum and courses.
    • Co-ordinate and administer courses/programmes, where required, as part of the GSMC’s academic and professional programs.
    • Deliver lectures, design and conduct case studies, seminars, workshops, consultancies and other formal and informal learning activities as part of the GSMC suite of offerings.
    • Monitor and evaluate programmes, courses and teaching performance.
    • Contribute to collaborative teaching, research and curriculum development projects in the areas of broadcast & multimedia production.
    • Engage in relevant and innovative research activities to advance the school’s scholarly research agenda in the areas of broadcast journalism, digital production and media innovation.
    • Maintain a sound and current knowledge and understanding of the field through research, scholarly activities and publications.
    • Contribute to maintaining and extending links between the School and relevant organisations, researchers and practitioners.
    • Mentor early career staff and students.
    • Identify and create opportunities for collaborative teaching and research projects with internal and external researchers and stakeholders.
    • Actively contribute to governance, marketing, promotion, and administrative activities to facilitate the strategic goals of the School and the University including being actively involved in the School.
    • Attend team meetings and other activities as well as contribute to appropriate commercial/consulting activities with other academic staff.

    Reports to: The Director, Academics, Graduate School of Media and Communications

    Requirements
    • A relevant PhD qualification from an accredited university in a relevant field
    • At least three (3) years of teaching experience at the University level as a lecturer
    • A minimum of twenty four (24) publication points of which at least sixteen (16) should be from refereed scholarly journals.
    • At least three (3) years professional experience in journalism and a broadcast and multimedia production or digital media.
    • A creative and imaginative approach to student-centered teaching
    • Good analytical skills and a methodical approach to tasks / problems
    • An ability to work well as a member of a teaching team to provide quality education to all students
    • Good oral and written communication skills – a capacity to communicate effectively with staff, students, employers and others.
    • Good conceptual skills.
    • Flexibility and the capacity to work under pressure
    • Able to prepare effective written and visual teaching materials including the effective use of Information Learning Technology e.g. Virtual Learning Environments, PowerPoint etc
    • Proven ability to maintain a professional approach in line with the University values while under pressure
    • Ability to relate effectively and sensitively to students and staff from a variety of backgrounds and cultures
    • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to equality and diversity and how it affects classroom practice
    • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence.
