    Deputy Director, Programme

    Responsibilities

    • PROGRAMME: Supports the Director in promoting a culture of results by coordinating the implementation of the results roadmap including by enhancing UNEP’s reporting and communication on results as well as by increasing the use of data.
    • Ensures that the outputs produced by the Division maintain high quality standards.
    • Ensures that all outputs produced by the Units under her/his supervision meet required standards before completion to ensure they comply with the relevant mandates.
    • Represents the Division at international, regional or national meetings and provides programmatic/substantive expertise on an issue or holds programmatic/substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.
    • Leads and supervises the organization of meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive issues.
    • Manages the substantive preparation and organization of such meetings or seminars.
    • COORDINATION: Co-ordinates and oversees the preparation of reports for presentation to inter-governmental bodies, including the General Assembly, the UN Environment Assembly, the Committee of Permanent Representatives based in Nairobi, the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, Committee for Programme Coordination, the Economic and Social Council, and other policy-making organs, as appropriate.
    • Under the guidance of the Director, reports to inter-governmental bodies on programme performance on the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work.
    • Supports the Director in fostering teamwork and communication among staff in the Division and across organizational boundaries.
    • MANAGEMENT: Assists the Director in preparing the work plan of the Division, determining priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery.
    • Oversees the day-to-day management of activities undertaken by the Division, ensures that programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion.
    • Undertakes or oversees the programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Division, including preparation of budgets, reporting on budget/programme performance, evaluation of staff performance (e-PAS), interviews of candidates for job openings, evaluation of candidates and preparation of inputs for results-based budgeting.
    • Supports the Director in staff recruitment, taking due account of gender and geographical balance. •Manages, guides, develops and trains staff under her/his supervision.
    • Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
    • Ensures that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need.

    Education

    • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business or public administration, finance, accounting, law, environmental science, social sciences or related area is required.
    • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in programme and human resources management, administration and financial management is required.
    • Demonstrated managerial experience in an international, regional or government organization is required.
    • Experience in developing and/or implementing international, regional or governmental environmental programmes involving various partners, clients and social actors is required.
    • Experience in leading teams and fostering teamwork, is desirable.
    • Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Intergovernmental Affairs and Meetings Support

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
    • This position is located in Governance Affairs Office in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the Nairobi duty Station. Under the direct supervision of the Liaison Officer, Governing Bodies Unit, Governance Affairs Office, the intern will support the Office which serves as the technical secretariat for the United Nations Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs.
    • In this context, the Office seeks energetic and motivated interns to support its work in the following areas, as assigned:
    • Assist in the preparation of procedural scripts for meetings, drafting official communication to Member States and undertake other preparatory tasks. 
    • Attend meetings and prepare written summaries of discussions; 
    • Assist with logistics during meetings, including interactive presentations, slide presentations, and virtual platforms;
    • Contribute to the preparation of various procedural documents, such as meeting agendas, talking points, as well as other papers and briefing materials;
    • Conduct research on intergovernmental procedure and practice of the Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs; and - Other tasks, as requested.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Undergraduate studies in environmental issues, law, jurisprudence, procedure, philosophy, political science or international relations. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience.
    • However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

    Programme Management Assistant

    Responsibilities

    • Programme management duties: Supports research, compiles, analyses, summarizes, and presents data and information on production and consumption of substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol and on illegal trade as submitted by parties to the Protocol.
    • Assists in the recording and analysis of the data on controlled substances received from the parties.
    • Processes and updates accounting framework data for essential uses, other than laboratory and analytical applications as submitted by the parties to the Montreal Protocol, into the database for controlled substances.
    • Provides responses to queries from members of the subsidiary bodies such as the Implementation Committee under the Non-Compliance Procedure for the Montreal Protocol and implementing agencies of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
    • Prepares, maintains and updates electronic files.
    • Undertakes research and selects a variety of information from office files, records, reports or other sources as required by the supervisor.
    • Drafts correspondence related to all aspects of the work of the Implementation Committee and to compliance with the Montreal Protocol.
    • Maintains the contact list of the current Committee members.

    Education

    • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Job - Specific Qualification

    • Supplementary training in accounting is required.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in general office support, program management, administrative assistance, or a related field is required.
    • The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
    • Experience in accounting is required.
    • Experience working with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or related applications is required
    • Experience working with Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems, in processing travel, budgets and preparing reports is desirable.
    • Experience in preparing cost estimates and expenditure monitoring is desirable.
    • One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or a related area is desirable.
