    Field Supervisor (2 Positions), IHD Office

    Job Summary

    This includes but is not limited to data management activities (collection, cleaning, coding, translation, etc., assisting in planning of fieldwork, consent study participants, stakeholder mapping, and mobilizing participants from the community. In addition, assist in supervising data collection and other administrative tasks required for carrying out field work.

    Responsibilities

    • Attend training on data collection and field activity management.
    • Assist in logistical preparation for recruitment and mobilization of study participants.
    • Assist in processing administrative clearances required to carry out field work across different regions.
    • Administer pretested data collection tools in a quantitative survey.
    • Carry out qualitative interviews with key informant interviews with key stakeholders.
    • Actively participate in the process of troubleshooting on any issues affecting or may affect study field operations.
    • Assist in community engagement processes.
    • Participate in debrief meetings as guided by the Project Manager
    • Attend to any other task required by the Project Manager

    Requirements

    • A diploma or a bachelor’s degree in development studies or other allied fields. 
    • Proficiency in use of smart phone/tablet to collect data is required.
    • Familiarity with research ethics and experience taking informed consent.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work within tight schedules.

    Relevant Experience.

    • Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in quantitative and/or mixed methods research including use of smartphones/tablets to collect data.
    • Experience in data coding and data transcription and translation is an added advantage.
    • Strong leadership, planning and problem-solving skills.
    • Good knowledge and research data management.
    • Demonstrate knowledge in community engagement in research.
    • Excellent demonstrated teamwork and coordination skills.

    Data Clerks (3 Positions), IHD Office

    Job Summary

    The Data Clerk will be required to support in the design and development of the study database and data collection tools for the study. He/she will also be involved in activities related to data collection, participant and sample ID management, tracking of participant follow-up, management of all data & IT devices, support management of user accounts and supporting IT infrastructure at the recruitment sites.

    Responsibilities

    • Contribute to the design and set up of study databases.
    • Support management of all study data handling systems: both paper and electronic.
    • Testing and troubleshooting data handling systems.
    • Support development and piloting of data collection tools.
    • Support training related to data entry and data quality and use of devices eg. Tablets, bar code scanners.
    • Support the selection, purchase, setup and maintenance of data collection devices: including computers, tablets and barcode readers.
    • Support the development of site-specific SOPs, policies, and processes for data collection and handling.
    • Respond to queries and data errors and implement corrective actions to clean the data.
    • Identify errors or potential sources of error in data collection systems, databases, and applications.

    Requirements

    • Diploma level education in any of the following or closely related fields: Information Technology, Computer Science, Statistics. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is an added advantage.
    • Certificate in Computer skills.

    Relevant Experience.

    • 1 year working experience.
    • Experience in data analysis will be an added advantage.

    Administrative Officer, IHD Office

    Job Summary

    To assist in the overall coordination of all the study activities including organizing meetings, preparing training schedules, booking of meeting venues, event management, and any other duties assigned to ensure the smooth running of the BigWin Project.

    Responsibilities

    • Providing high-level administrative support and assistance to the country Lead and study PI.
    • Drafting and editing project-related documents and correspondences, e.g., project forms and emails.
    • Managing project calendar effectively to make sure everything functions smoothly.
    • Updating and maintaining all project records.
    • Scheduling meetings and appointments as necessary.
    • Attending required meetings, taking accurate minutes or notes or otherwise, transcribing recorded meetings, sending them out within the stipulated timeframe.
    • Compiling lists of various project activities categorized by priority.
    • Scheduling weekly assigned tasks for different study teams and sending reminders whenever appropriate.
    • Managing schedule changes in a timely and effective manner.
    • Flagging action items requiring the immediate attention of the study PIs using available tracker.
    • Assist with the planning and implementation of all project activities.
    • Assist in preparing project reports such as mid-term and annual research project performance reports.
    • Helping in the preparation of training materials and equipment before training and safeguarding them during training and workshops.
    • Liaise with other departments e.g., Finance, HR, travel, and procurement to ensure smooth implementation of project activities.
    • Facilitating booking and procurement of travel tickets and accommodation for Hilton project staff, consultants, and partners in liaison with the travel and housing department.
    • Facilitate procurement of services for Hilton Project.

     Requirements

    • A Bachelor’s degree in the business management, commerce, project planning and management, or related field with at least 2 years’ experience as an Administrative Assistant/Office Manager/Scheduling Coordinator/ Project Coordinator.

    OR

    • A diploma in the business management, commerce, project planning and management, or related field with at least 4 years’ experience as an Administrative Assistant / Office Manager / Scheduling Coordinator / Project Coordinator.

    Relevant Experience.

    • Experience coordinating or supporting a research project.
    • Experience in drafting and presenting basic project reports.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office and familiarity with online document storage platforms such as OneDrive and Dropbox.
    • Experience working in a multi-cultural settling.

    Postdoctoral Fellow (One Year Renewable), Brain and Mind Institute

    Job Purpose/Summary 

    The BMI at AKU is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for an innovative grant-funded research project focused on structural brain imaging and wearable (smartwatch) data collection and analysis. This role is aimed at exploring the mechanisms of brain health and diseases. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team, contributing to pioneering research with opportunities to spend time in leading laboratories at Dartmouth and University College London. The duration of the fellowship is 2 years, contingent on continued funding.

    • Develop innovative computational methods/models for neuroimaging and wearable sensor data analysis.
    • Author and co-author research papers for publication in top-tier journals and present findings at international conferences.
    • Assist in grant writing and project reporting to funding organizations.
    • Supervise and mentor graduate students and junior researchers, guiding them in research methodologies, data analysis, and scientific writing.
    • Engage with community stakeholders in Nairobi to align research with local health priorities and facilitate translation of research findings into practical health solutions.

    Relevant Experience and Qualifications 

    • Doctoral degree in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Neuropsychology, Psychology, Medicine, or a related field (Candidates with a Master’s degree or who are in the process of completing a doctoral degree may be considered subject to their having sufficient experience)
    • Demonstrated experience in neuroimaging data analysis (MRI, fMRI) and/or wearable sensor data, with strong computational skills including proficiency in R, MATLAB, or Python.
    • Demonstrated experience in statistics and computational modeling.
    • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; knowledge of Swahili or other local languages is advantageous.
    • Experience in multicultural research environments, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa is desirable
    • An interest in community engagement and public health impact.
    • Strong ability to work in a multidisciplinary team as well as independently.
    • Exceptional organizational skills and a commitment to conducting high-quality research.
