    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    • This is a senior position which entails professional leadership, mentoring/coaching and taking part in top level decision making of both technical and administrative nature.

    Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:

    • Provide guidance in compounding and dispensing prescribed pharmaceuticals and provide consultative services to both clients and the clinical health care team
    • Ensure patient confidentiality and patient centred care
    • Provide information and guidance to prescribers on correct prescribing patterns
    • Provide information to prescribers on medication in stock and new supplies
    • Promote and maintain quality in all services and ensure continuous quality improvement measures are in place
    • Monitor storage conditions, expiry status and security of pharmaceuticals
    • Ensure that pharmacovigillance activities are taking place in the hospital
    • Adhere to the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya Code of Ethics and Standards for Pharmacy Practice in Kenya
    • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety at work policies and procedures
    • Ensure the availability of adequate systems for the supply/ distribution of medicines in all outlets
    • Take part in supply chain management to ensure that essential stocks are available in the pharmacy at all times
    • Ensure proper receipt, storage and issuance of pharmaceuticals and maintain appropriate documentation for accountability
    • Facilitate allocation of duties and distribution of personnel in all pharmacy outlets
    • Supervise internships and training of Pharmacists and interns in the department
    • Provide technical support to staff undertaking clinical research
    • Ensure preparation of department annual work plan and budget aligned to the hospital strategic plan
    • developing and reviewing standard operating procedures for all pharmaceutical services in the facility;
    • coordinating capacity building and deployment of dental personnel.

    Requirements

    For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:-

    • served in the grade of Assistant Chief Pharmacist for a minimum period of three (3) years;
    • Bachelor of Pharmacy (B Pharm) degree from an institution recognized by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board;
    • Master’s degree in any of the following: Pharmaceutical Policy Analysis and Formulation; Pharmacognosy and Complementary Medicine;
    • Toxicology; Clinical Pharmacy; Pharmacovigilance and Pharmaco-epidemiology; Medicines Supplies Management; Medicines Regulation; Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Control; Pharmaceutics; Pharmacology and Therapeutics; Pharmaceutical Analysis; Tropical and
    • Infectious Diseases; Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Industrial Pharmacy; Health Systems Management; Pharmaceutical Care; Health
    • Informatics; Health Economics; Epidemiology; Biostatistics; Medical statistics; Drug Design and Development; Clinical trials; Quality Assurance;
    • Radio pharmacy; Public Health; Microbiology; or Molecular Pharmacology from an institution recognized by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
    • Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical laws
    • Familiar with the Code Of Ethics and Standards for Pharmacy Practice in Kenya
    • Deep understanding of the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, and regulatory requirements of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
    • Knowledge of the national anti-retroviral dispensing tool
    • Knowledge of hospital inventory tracking tool
    • Certificate of Registration as a Pharmacist by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board;
    • Valid practicing license from Pharmacy and Poisons Board;
    • Certificate in Strategic Leadership Development Programme lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institution;
    • Certificate in Computer Application Skills from a recognized institution; and
    • Demonstrated professional competence and managerial capability as reflected in work performance and results.
