Chief Sub-Editor (1 Position) at Mediamax Network Limited

The Role:

• The successful candidate will lead teams of Sub-Editors to ensure that stories to be published in People Daily newspaper and the PD E-Paper are compelling, accurate and presented in grammatically correct language.
• The selected candidate will generally be responsible for determining news space and display in People Daily.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

• Oversee the work of Sub-Editors, setting the highest editorial standards for them to follow.
• Be complex and agile in thought to reinforce the dynamics of producing a quality and competitive free newspaper and monetising digital content.
• Ensure all facts in stories are checked and that grammar, punctuation and spelling are correct.
• Be the curator of the People Daily style, making sure it is strictly adhered to.
• Manage a busy team, working at high velocity.

Requirements:

• Strong experience as a Sub-Editor or Chief Sub-Editor on a newspaper, website or magazine, publishing high volumes at high velocity.
• Have the ability to work within tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Have experience working in digital publishing.
• Demonstrable ability in independent writing and editing.
• Possess the instinct for brilliant layout and design, strong headlines, standfirsts, captions and proofreading.
• Have strong people and performance management skills with a proven track record.
• Demonstrate solid knowledge of Media Law and Media Ethics and be comfortable taking a sub-editing test.
• Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Possess the confidence to play a key role in a major company.
• Must have earned a degree in Journalism, Media Studies or English.
• Postgraduate training in journalism and the ability to work with Creative Suite -InDesign will be an added advantage.
