    Consultant – Bone Health and Ageing

    Purpose of consultancy

    To contribute to WHO’s technical work envisaged for developing the strategy roadmap to prevent fracture and fracture risk among older persons. 

    Deliverables

    The consultant will work closely with the WHO Collaborating Center for Epidemiology of Musculoskeletal Health and Ageing and collaborate with the senior researchers to conduct technical activities required for the deliverables listed below. 

    Task 1: Contribute to a systematic review of measurement properties of instruments to assess the risk of fractures in older persons.
    Due date: June – August 2023     

    • Deliverable 1: Draft a systematic review protocol for discussion with the expert working group.
    • Deliverable 2: Collect inputs from the WHO Bone Health Expert Working Group and revise the protocol for publication in a peer-review journal. 
    • Deliverable 3: Conduct a systematic review and synthesis of evidence on measurement properties of instruments to assess the risk of fracture in older persons.

    Task 2: Contribute to a systematic review of interventions to prevent fractures in older persons.
    Due date: December 2023     

    • Deliverable 1: Draft systematic review protocol for discussion with the WHO Bone Health Working Group.
    • Deliverable 2: Collect inputs from the WHO Bone Health Expert Working Group and revise the protocol for publication in a peer-review journal. 
    • Deliverable 3: Conduct a systematic literature search and identify relevant intervention studies. 

    Qualifications, experience, skills and languages

    Educational Qualifications:

    Essential:

    • First university degree in public health.

    Desirable:

    • Advanced university degree in epidemiology.

    Experience

    Essential:

    • 5 years of relevant experience in musculoskeletal conditions and ageing.
    • Research experience in low and middle-income countries. 
    • Track record of conducting literature reviews, evidence synthesis, data analysis, documentation and implementation.

    Desirable:

    • Experience in epidemiological research on musculoskeletal conditions and ageing.
    • Experience in global health estimates (e.g., meta-analysis of prevalence and incidence data).

    Skills/Knowledge:

    Essential:

    • Excellent knowledge of WHO tools and guidelines on older persons. 
    • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications including e-mail, PowerPoint, Excel, and word processing.
    • Excellent knowledge of STATA or R software.
    • Excellent planning and organizational skills and ability to deliver under tight deadlines.
    • Excellent knowledge of process, method and reporting of global health estimates.
    • Excellent epidemiological and statistical skills in multi-country data analysis. 

    Languages required:

    Essential:  

    • Expert knowledge of English. 
    • Intermediate knowledge of French.
