    Early Career Postdoctoral Scientist

    Overall Job purpose

    KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), University of Nairobi, is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Early Career Postdoctoral Scientist.
    The incumbent’s areas of research will entail mucosal immunology work which involves direct visualisation of the mucosal tissue barriers, host target or effector cells, and infected cells using explant models.

    The Position

    This is a full-time position based at the University of Nairobi. The incumbent reports to the Principal Investigator and directly supervises Research Technicians, interns and students as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Live cell microscopy using state-of-the-art confocal and widefield fluorescence microscopes
    • Molecular biology techniques such as amplification, sequencing and analysing DNA or rRNA genes
    • Immunofluorescence staining and microscopy of the tissue sections
    • Generation and characterization of replicative-competent HIV-1 primary viruses
    • Performance of ex vivo explant experiments using human tissues
    • Flow cytometric analysis of mucosal mononuclear cells from tissue explants
    • Technology transfer between partners and collaborators
    • Training and supervision of technicians and interns
    • Presentation of results to the group, programme, and network
    • Preparation of scientific manuscripts
    • Any other responsibilities that may arise from time to time

    Minimum Requirements

    • PhD degree in Immunology, Molecular Biology or related field
    • Proven track record in Immunology and/or Molecular Biology laboratory research
    • Relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals will be an added advantage

    Terms of appointment

    This a position whose tenure is one (1) year contract renewable based on performance and by mutual consent. The salary is negotiable depending on the level of education and work experience
