    Clinical Nurse (NICU/NHDU)

    Responsibilities

    • Complete assessment and re-assessment of patients to identify their care needs
    • Develop written care plans based on patients changing needs, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of interventions
    • Initiate cardiac monitoring both room and central, be able to interpret monitor trends and communicate critical changes to the physician and Nurse manager
    • Carry out other hemodynamic monitoring to include CVP, UVCs, lab, radiological and ABG evaluations
    • Document all assessment data, investigation results, care given, discussions with the multidisciplinary team, family/patient interactions in an accurate, comprehensive and timely manner
    • Prepare for and assist the physician in emergency procedures necessary for prompt control of patient’s condition e.g. intubation, insertion of invasive lines, drains and administration of surfactant.
    • Initiate mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) based on physician orders,
    • Assess patient’s readiness for weaning and implement the weaning and extubation protocols
    • Maintain adequate airway management to include oxygen therapy, nebulization and suctioning
    • Perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia as per protocol
    • Be able to perform peritoneal dialysis and care for a patient on the same as instructed.
    • Accurately administer all medication as per the treatment order sheet and in line with MMU guidelines
    • Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching
    • Be able to commence enteral, oral and gastric feeds as prescribed, assess absorption and elimination and give feedback as appropriate
    • Be able to recognize a patient in a pre- arrest or arrest states, and to activate Emergency Response
    • Team and actively participate in the resuscitation of the patient
    • Provide safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices and other
    • safety policies, and perform timely safety checks on incubators, IV pumps, oxygen source, ventilators and cardiac monitors
    • Be able to care for children undergoing exchange transfusion
    • Be accountable for judicious and efficient use of resources i.e. accurate and timely billing of ward stock drugs and consumables
    • Care for equipment through proper cleaning, storage, per shift check of the inventory and timely
    • reporting and follow up of non-functional equipment to the nurse manager
    • Participate in unit based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, spot checks and skill checks
    • Assist in other related Paediatrics Units in time of low census
    • Any other assignment that is deemed appropriate for this level.

    Requirements:

    • RN from a recognized school of nursing or University
    • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • European Paediatrics Life Support (EPLS)

    Senior Technologist, Cons Clinic-DOM

    Responsibilities:

    • Independently carry out, analyze and report EEG procedures/test.
    • Independently carry out Nerve Conduction Tests (NCV).
    • Assist the Neurologist in performing electromyography test (EMG tests);
    • Calibrate EEG and Nerve conduction machine and ensure smooth function of neurophysiology machines.
    • Care for equipment through cleaning, storage, per shift check of the inventory and timely reporting and follow up of nonfunctional equipment to the nurse manager
    • Participate in unit based quality and patient safety activities such as quality improvement projects (CQI), development of policies, procedures, audits and spot checks;
    • Participate in data collection and monitoring of unit based quality and performance indicators such as patient volumes, turnaround times and no show rates.
    • Alert the neurophysiology Coordinator about dissatisfied clients, incidences and any other unusual occurrences.
    • Assist neurophysiology coordinator in research and continuous education to ensure standard growth of the Neurophysiology department.
    • Provide safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices and other safety policies.
    • Be accountable for judicious and efficient use of resources i.e. accurate and timely billing of ward stocks and consumables

    Requirements:

    • Diploma in Neurophysiology Technology from a recognized Training Institution
    • Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience from a busy Neurophysiology Department in a recognized Institution
    • Demonstrate evidence based knowledge of current practices in Neurophysiology

    Oncology Home Health Nurse

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide clinical care at AKUH or in home-based settings through the AKUH@Home (oncology) program
    • Travel to patients’ home and perform comprehensive patient and environmental assessments related to oncology home health needs
    • Develop care plan in consultation with clinician
    • Coordinate and implement care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the continuum, utilizing nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation)
    • Provide nursing care, administer medication and perform routine clinical procedures according to program policies within the prescribed plan in the home setting
    • Support the patient and family (including psychosocial support) through disease progression, symptom management, advanced care planning and life closure, as appropriate
    • Ensure appropriate handling and disposal of biological and hazardous specimens/materials
    • Oversee inventory management and facilitate maintenance and billing of clinical supplies
    • Inform the medical and clinical leads of any adverse event, incidence and occurrence related to patient/staff, including a written report of the incident/event and the action(s)
    • Initiate and perform ongoing review of policies related to service provided
    • Support clinical team, as primary liaison and be a patient advocate at all times
    • Participate in patient and program quality and safety initiatives.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Diploma in Nursing will be considered if candidate has significant past oncology experience
    • Minimum of 3 years of work experience as a nurse in a hospital (inpatient) and/or outpatient setting
    • Experience in oncology, home care and/or palliative care is preferred
    • BLS certification.
    • Valid Nursing Council of Kenya License.
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Excellent organizational capabilities and ability to handle diverse set of tasks simultaneously
    • Strong self-initiative while working as part of a team or independently
    • Ability to handle stressful situations and meet deadlines
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication - written and verbal
