    Communications Officer

    Job Description

    Project Summary 

    FHI 360 is recruiting a Communications Officer for a new activity, Safeguarding Democratic Space in Kenya (SADES-K), which will be implemented from 2018 to 2021. The overall goal of SADES-K is to enhance Kenya’s ability to hold a national conversation on reforms and national cohesion, and to safeguard democratic gains, including protecting civic space, respect for human rights and observance of rule of law.

    Responsibilities

    The Communications Officer will support the SADES-K Chief of Party and other project staff in coordinating the day-to-day implementation of communication activities at the community, county and national levels. Responsibilities include:

    • Coordinating project communications with local stakeholders and the dissemination of outreach materials;
    • Overseeing dissemination of invites, newsletters, press releases and other announcements;
    • Organizing, managing and building stakeholder contact lists;
    • Assisting in organizing project related workshops and events;
    • Supporting the design, coordination, and supervision of campaigns, including proposed visibility strategy activities and consulting on media-related activities;
    • Working with traditional and social media to promote project activities related to good governance, social inclusion, and freedom of expression.

    Qualifications

    • University degree in journalism, communications, law, international affairs or related field.
    • At least 5 years’ experience with a broad range of media platforms, including radio, TV, social and digital media.
    • At least 2 years’ technical experience engaging with government, private sector and civil society stakeholders.
    • Previous experience in civic communication and community mobilization.
    • Prior exposure and experience working with USAID or similar donor programs.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili.

    Data Coordinator II

    Job Description

    Directly reports to: Data Coordinator III (Statistician)

    Location: Nairobi with 50% travel within Kenya

    Duration: 1 year

    Position Description:

    Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey under the Linkages across the Continuum of HIV Services for Key Populations Affected by HIV (LINKAGES) Project. LINKAGES project goal is to accelerate the ability of governments and organizations working with key populations at risk of HIV to plan and implement services that reduce HIV transmission and extend the lives of those already living with HIV.

    Job Summary:

    The Data Coordinator II will work directly under the supervision of the Data Coordinator III (Statistician) to implement data driven activities to plan, monitor, track and report on progress throughout the Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey (IBBS) study.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Liaise with the Data Coordinator III (Statistician) and survey team in retrieving data and organizing data for various research questions from the databases.
    • Support survey teams by building their capacity in data management.
    • Ensure quality data for analysis by cleaning research data retrieved from the databases and document necessary corrections.
    • In liaison with the Data Coordinator III (Statistician), perform preliminary analysis to identify potential data anomalies.
    • Contribute to the design of protocols, which define what and when data are to be collected.
    • Design and approve forms on which data are collected.
    • Perform Quality Assurance checks and site visit to ensure data collection protocols are implemented.
    • Train survey teams to help improve the quality of the data being collected.
    • Advise and perform appropriate queries and summary reports from the databases and assist in development of associated databases and ensuring they meet requirements for the entry and reporting of clinical data.

    Minimum Requirement Standards:

    • Must hold a degree in Bachelor of Science in Statistics/Mathematics or a related field with 1-3 years relevant experience; or Masters’ degree in Statistics/Mathematics will be an added advantage.
    • Must possess statistical and computer experience with 1-3 years’ experience.
    • Must be proficient in statistical software e.g. SAS, SPSS, STATA, S-Plus/R, EpiInfo and spreadsheets.
    • Must be proficient in data analysis, interpretation and manipulation of data, have knowledge of database management and retrieval methods.

    Senior Technical Officer - Research

    Job Description

    Reports to:       LINKAGES Program Director

    Location:          Nairobi with 50% travel locally  

    Duration:          1 year

    Position Description:

    Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey under the Linkages across the Continuum of HIV Services for Key Populations Affected by HIV (LINKAGES) Project. LINKAGES project goal is to accelerate the ability of governments and organizations working with key populations at risk of HIV to plan and implement services that reduce HIV transmission and extend the lives of those already living with HIV.

    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the LINKAGES Program Director, the Senior Technical Officer, Research will participate in the technical design and lead in the implementation aspects of the Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey (IBBS) study on behalf of FHI 360. The incumbent will also oversee survey technical staff as well as ensure compliance to all ethical board and donor institutional requirements.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop & implement standard operating procedures for the survey.
    • Ensure regulatory compliance with all ethical board and research monitoring auditor requirements including meeting documentation standards and reporting of incidents or adverse events.
    • Manage recruitment of the survey teams.
    • Oversee formative assessment, finalization and pretesting of survey tools.
    • Oversee the training of survey staff.
    • Develop team deployment work plans and give periodic progress updates to various survey planning and monitoring organs.
    • Work together with regional teams to ensure data is collected in a timely manner with quality.
    • Ensure efficient linkages between sites and laboratories.
    • Coordinate survey planning meetings between FHI 360 and survey partner organizations including Government of Kenya, and USAID.
    • Coordinate provision of all technical assistance by FHI 360 staff to the Ministry of Health.
    • Actively participate in the development of monthly progress reports, presentations, publications and abstracts.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Minimum Requirement Standards:

    • BS/BA in public health, social sciences or any other relevant field, and 7-9 years relevant experience with international development programs; a MS/MA in public health or related field with 5-7 years; or MD/PhD in related field with 3-5 years relevant experience will be an added advantage.
    • Experience in managing national or regional public health research programs in areas such as HIV, TB, and maternal child health in Kenya.
    • Strong supervisory and management experience in leading large multi-disciplinary research teams.
    • Prior clinical research or program evaluation experience.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Data Coordinator III (Statistician)

    Job Description

    Job Summary:

    The Data Coordinator III (Statistician) will work directly under the supervision of the Senior Technical Officer, Research and will be in charge of all aspects of data analysis. S/he will develop an analysis plan ahead of time and initiate analysis as and when the data is cleaned and available.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the protocol review and modification as necessary pre-study, and during the study.
    • Develop data analysis plan and analyse data using appropriate software and methods and advise on appropriate statistical techniques for data analysis and interpretation.
    • Advise and perform appropriate queries from the database and assist in development of associated databases.
    • Providing advice on sampling and frequently observing sampling process.
    • Support the Data Coordinator II in actively interrogating data for discrepancies, errors, and missing data, in order to verify the accuracy and validity of the data. 
    • Reporting and liaising with Principal Investigators, Senior Technical Officer, Research and Data Coordinator II on the quality of the data and resolving any errors according to the study protocol.
    • Liaising with Senior Technical Officer, Research and Data Coordinator II about data quality and missing data, verifying data accuracy and validity.
    • Ensuring deadlines and project milestones relating to data and analyses are met, coordinating with other members of staff and external collaborators as necessary
    • Monitor the study implementation process and adherence to protocol and methodologies as prescribed.
    • Support the Senior Technical Officer, Research to generate manuscripts and reports for submission to IRB, donor and other stakeholders
    • Ensuring deadlines and project milestones relating to data and analyses are met, coordinating with other members of staff and external collaborators as necessary.
    • Scheduling and preparing reports of analyses for independent Data Monitoring Committees, Steering Committees, and publications.
    • Discussing and interpreting results with colleagues and collaborators in the trial/study.
    • Support the production of summary tables and graphics for interim and final analyses.

    Minimum Requirement Standards:

    • Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Environmental Health, Economics or any other related field with 3-5 years’ relevant experience
    • Master’s degree required, preferably in Biostatistics or Statistics with 1-3 years’ relevant experience or PhD with 0-1 years relevant experience.
    • Proficiency in statistical software e.g. SAS, SPSS, STATA, R, epi-info., Spreadsheets with 3-5 years’ experience with analysis of complex datasets highly desirable.
    • Previous experience in epidemiological research studies.

    Technical Officer I, Laboratory

    Job Description

    Job Summary:

    The Technical Officer I, Laboratory will work directly under the supervision of the Senior Technical Officer, Research to implement all laboratory related aspects of the Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey(IBBS).

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support the development of laboratory analytical plan for the survey.
    • Ensure that laboratory supplies are procured and delivered to the field.
    • Ensure that logistics for appropriate collection, storage, and transport of specimens during field work are in place.
    • Coordinate with local and central level laboratories to ensure that SOP and quality control procedures are in place.
    • Assist in recruiting and training Laboratory Technicians for each survey team to adhere to good clinical laboratory practice (including developing training materials).
    • Visit the field venues during biological sample collection to ensure that the collection and storage at the field site happen as per protocol.
    • Coordinate with the laboratories to ensure delivery of results in a timely manner.

    Minimum Requirement Standards:

    • Higher National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent with 5-7 years of related work experience within a clinical or research laboratory, including experience with laboratory quality control and quality assurance systems and implementation OR
    • Degree in biological science or laboratory sciences within a clinical or diagnostic discipline with 3-5 years relevant experience OR
    • Master’s degree in related field with 1-3 years of relevant work experience. 
    • Ability to provide mentorship and to perform quality assurance assessments against accepted national and international standards and regulations.
    • Direct experience developing and delivering trainings.
    • Proficient computer skills in MS Office Suite.
    • Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills.
    • Good in both written and spoken English and report writing.
    • Supervisory experience is an added advantage.
    • Experience with US government-funded programs is a plus.
