    Community Engagement Lead/ or A Nurse Researcher (Female)

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT LEAD/ OR A NURSE RESEARCHER (FEMALE) – 15 MONTHS 

    The HEARTH KENYA PROJECT project will specifically target mothers who have recently given birth and their newborns. This individual will navigate interactions with mothers, conduct home visits, and collaborate with community health volunteers, leaders, Chiefs, and health clinic staff. Given the sensitivity and criticality of this role to the project’s success, the Community Engagement lead should have the following qualifications:

    • A mature female, conversant with Kilifi culture, either born there or through work experience with a good mastery of Kiswahili. 
    • She should have experience working with mothers in the health facilities and homes, conversant weighing newborns and working with postpartum mothers and community health volunteers.
    • She should be a nurse, a social scientist or a public health specialist. A nurse with research experience is preferred to help with clinical data interpretation.
    • She will work closely with project manager and research interns to collect both qualitative and quantitative data, eliciting conversations with women and working closely with the project manager and research interns to install data loggers in the homes.
    • She should be someone who can step in if the Project Manager is absent. She must show a good mastery on protocol implementation, data protection, participants’ confidentiality and consenting process.
    • She must have experience recruiting difficult to engage patients in the homes and in health facility settings.
    • She must be a good writer to contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
    • She must be able to interpret clinical data.

    Requirement for Appointment:

    • Minimum of a Diploma in Nursing (KRCHN) from a recognized institution
    • A registered member of the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Must have worked in a similar position for at least 2 years
    • Excellent computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, internet etc.
    • Personal Attributes: High level of integrity, team player, emotional intelligence and collaboration
    • Experience working in a research setting or project will be an added advantage

    Quantitative Methods Research Intern

    QUANTITATIVE METHODS RESEARCH INTERN – 3 POSITIONS – 15 MONTHS

    The following will be their roles:

    • Work closely with the research officer and Project Manager
    • Attend meetings.
    • Assist with data analysis and preparation of manuscripts • Obtain data from MET, participants’ homes and hospitals.
    • Shadow Project Manager
    • Conduct systematic reviews.
    • Attend meetings with PI/UK for mentoring.

    Requirement for Appointment:

    • First degree in health or related area.
    • Basic understanding of qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews, focus groups, participant observation).
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). iv. Proficient in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata, SAS) and/or programming languages commonly used for data analysis (e.g., Python).
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to prepare clear and concise research reports and presentations.
    • Strong analytical thinking and attentive to detail. Ability to critically evaluate and interpret qualitative data.
    • High ethical standards and respect for confidentiality and research ethics.
    • Must have good interpersonal skills to interact with research participants and team members.
    • Self-motivated and proactive in managing time and tasks effectively. xi. Easily adaptable to the changing project needs and flexible to handle a variety of research tasks.
    • Willing to learn new research techniques and methods.

    Qualitative Methods Research Intern

    QUALITATIVE METHODS RESEARCH INTERN – 3 POSITIONS – 15 MONTHS

    The following will be their roles:

    • Shadow Project Manager, community engagement lead 
    • Attend training events (capacity strengthening)
    • Assist in data analyses.
    • Assist in the preparation of draft manuscripts.
    • Interview mothers, transcribe data; translate data and code interviews.
    • Learn how to analyse behavioural data using NVIVO 12
    • Must be willing to be trained to learn how to conduct systematic reviews.
    • Must live in Kilifi or Mombasa
    • Attend meetings with PI/Kenya for mentoring.

    Requirement for Appointment:

    • First degree in health or related area.
    • Basic understanding of qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews, focus groups, participant observation).
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). iv. Familiar with qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti) is an advantage

    Research Officer

    RESEARCH OFFICER – 15 MONTHS

    The research officer will be employed full-time to help install data loggers, calibrate and download data weekly from houses and hospitals, and help the Project Manager to collect routine health data from the hospitals. The following will be their roles:

    • Download indoor/personal temperature data weekly.
    • Update local MET data quarterly.
    • Contribute to the drafting of manuscripts.
    • Attend all scheduled meetings without fail.

    Requirement for Appointment:

    • First degree in health or related area.
    • Experience as a research assistant and with data collector.
    • Experience working in a hospital setting.
    • Must show interest in climate change.
    • Must be living in the area.

    Community Health Volunteers - 6 Posts

    COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEERS – 6 POSITIONS – 15 MONTHS

    They will be recruited locally from the communities where women live to help with diaries and weighing of babies. The volunteers must be residents of Kilifi or people with strong ties to the local area.

    Requirement for Appointment:

    • Must have basic literacy and numeracy skills.
    • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey information.
    • Be able to speak the local language(s) fluently and communicate with diverse community members.
    • Be willing to volunteer time and effort for the benefit of the community.
    • Must have high ethical standards and integrity in handling sensitive health information.
    • Must uphold confidentiality and build trust within the community.
    • Must be dependable and consistent in performing volunteer duties.
    • Must be time conscious and adhere to agreed schedules and responsibilities.
    • Must have respect for local customs, traditions, and beliefs, and be able to work effectively within the cultural context of the community.
    • Be willing to travel within the community to reach different households and individuals.
