    Research Assistant (Data & IT), Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, Kilifi

    Job Summary

    The successful candidate is required to support the Data Manager with activities related to screening and recruitment of participants, data collection, data cleaning and follow-up of participants for the Inclusive Artificial Intelligence for Accessible Medical Imaging Across Resource-Limited Settings (AIMIX) research project. This project aims at to develop artificial intelligence aided pregnancy screening using low-cost fetal ultrasound. The successful candidate will support the Data Manager in the development and maintenance of study tools for data collection.

    This position is based in Kilifi.

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare and maintain data collection devices e.g. computers and bar code readers
    • Install and update applications and software as required
    • Maintain and troubleshoot network related issues at the site
    • Provide IT support and attend to end-users’ requests and problems
    • Offer support to users in backing up and restoring files
    • Initiate procurement of urgent and regular day to day needs of IT equipment
    • Maintain an updated inventory of all ICT equipment
    • Support the Data Manager in training research and clinical staff on data collection
    • Data extraction from hospital databases
    • Support the Data Manager in generation of reports
    • Any other responsibility as assigned by the Data Manager

    Requirements

    • Must have at least a Diploma in IT or related field
    • Have additional training or demonstrable competence in ODK, ODKx, REDcap, MS-Access,SQL-Server, MySQL, Oracle or DHIS-2
    • Experiece in data collection and data handling for research studies or programs is key to this role
    • Relevant experience in a health research environment including community and public health facility settings
    • Experience in programming and troubleshooting electronic field data capture platforms will be an added advantage
    • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
    • Have excellent Attention-toDetail skills

    Research Assistant, Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

    Job Summary

    The purpose of this job is to contribute to the mission and vision of CoEWCH by providing expertise in executing the Women in Health and their Economic, Equity and livelihood statuses during Emergency preparedness and Response (WHEELER) project. The position is based in Mombasa and Kilifi.

    Responsibilities

    • Collect data using the digital survey tools
    • Attend and participate in fieldwork training workshop
    • Schedule interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)
    • Conduct in-depth interviews as directed by the Principal Investigator
    • Notetaking during interviews
    • Transcribe audio-recordings of interviews and FGDs
    • Prepare summary notes after each KII and FGDs
    • Summarize outcomes of dissemination meetings

    Requirements

    • Must have a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in a Social Science or other relevant field with relevant accompanying experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
    • For degree holders - minimum 2-years’ experience in quantitative and qualitative research work
    • For diploma holders - minimum 5-years’ experience in quantitative and qualitative research work
    • Have experience working with the MoH in the selected counties of Mombasa and Kilifi
    • Have experience and familiarity with in-depth interviewing procedures and practices
    • Have demonstrable experience in audio-recording and transcribing
    • Experience in identifying key points in in-depth interviews, note taking, summarizing and beefing up notes in view of project objectives is essential for this role
    • Have experience in mobilizing and moderating Focus Group Discussions of different age groups 

    Have demonstrable experience of previous work as a Research Assistant in quantitative and qualitative research projects
    Have experience in scheduling interviews with key informants
    Have efficient record keeping of fieldwork data and schedules as well as filing of notes

    Research Nurse, Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Study Coordinator, the successful candidates is required to contribute to recruitment of participants, data collection and follow-up of participants for the Inclusive Artificial Intelligence for Accessible Medical Imaging Across Resource-Limited Settings (AIMIX) research project. This project aims at to develop artificial intelligence aided pregnancy screening using low-cost fetal ultrasound.

    The Research Nurse will be required to conduct the following activities at the health facility: Screening and recruitment of study participants, clinical and non-clinical data collection, sample collection and handling, anthropometry assessment and simple clinical assessments and follow-up of participants.

    He/she will also be trained to perform simple ultrasound procedures and to retrieve ultrasound images from image archives (eg. PACS) to help build a database of ultrasound images. Participant follow up will include extraction of participant data and perinatal outcomes from patient files and databases.

    He / She will be required to comply with stipulated guidelines on all study activities. The Research Nurse will be required to be sensitive and considerate throughout the encounter with participants, their families and other health facility staff and at all times to display a professional attitude.

    The position is based at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. The role may include occasional local travel to AKU satellite facilities and to other AIMIX study sites in Kenya.

    Responsibilities

    • Liaise with health facility staff to identify potentially eligible study participants for recruitment into specific studies and sub-studies
    • Communicate to prospective study participants about the research study
    • Screen and recruit study participants including administering informed consent
    • Clinical and non-clinical data collection from study participants
    • Perform anthropometric measurements and vital signs measurements for study participants
    • Collect, transport and log biological samples for the study 
    • Conduct clinical measurements and clinical tests (e.g. point of care tests, bedside tests) for the study
    • Conduct special study procedures for the study including simple ultrasound procedures
    • Retrieve ultrasound images for research participants from the clinical and research databases
    • Retrieve participant data on perinatal outcomes from the clinical databases
    • Conduct participant follow up for assessment of perinatal outcomes
    • Create summary reports for activities and relevant events affecting the study as guided by the study coordinator
    • Attend training sessions and obtain relevant competency in skills essential for the role
    • Any other responsibility as allocated by the study coordinator. This may include activities in the community and activities in other studies within the Centre of Excellence Women and Child Health

    Requirements

    • Must have a Diploma in Kenya Registered Nurse Midwife or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse or equivalent
    • Have a valid Practicing License from the Nursing Council of Kenya 
    • Have basic Computer literacy and training 
    • Have at least 1 year relevant experience at a busy health facility
    • Experience in mobile data collection tools is key for this position
    • Have Clinical experience in nursing and/or midwifery
    • Have demonstrable experience working at the maternity unit, antenatal care unit or child health units at hospital or health centre level
    • Experience in clinical research is an asset
    • Experience using Hospital Information Systems for patient data will be an added advantage
