    AI Manager

    About the Role:

    The successful candidate will join CfA’s Technology team. The Tech team is distributed across East/West Africa and benchmarks itself on similar civic technology initiatives elsewhere in the world that build digital democracy solutions.

    As an AI Manager, you’ll be responsible for developing and implementing CfA’s AI strategy to drive positive social change. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will lead and collaborate with a diverse team of technologists, designers, and product managers in designing and deploying AI-driven solutions that align with CfA’s goals. You will also work closely with stakeholders to build trust, mitigate risks and increase accountability around the applications of AI.

    Some of the products that you may work with us on include: 

    1. Our machine learning and natural language processing analysis platforms (such as CivicSignal and connectedAFRICA
    2. Our bots and widgets (such as DebunkBotBiscuitIndex and TaxClock)
    3. Our public-facing web platforms and tools (such as PesaYetuHURUmapAfrileaks, and FeedShield)

    Responsibilities: Your daily tasks will include:

    • Develop the vision and roadmap for impactful AI/Gen AI initiatives spanning areas such as civic engagement, public policy, journalism, and social impact.
    • Build and lead a high-performing team of AI professionals capable of implementing this vision, fostering their professional growth, expertise, and collaboration.
    • Uphold best practices across the AI lifecycle – unbiased data, transparent modelling, and ethical deployment.
    • Collaborate across teams to identify high-impact, socially beneficial AI use cases and ensure seamless integration.
    • Build trust by engaging all stakeholders, communities, government, and industry to align AI efforts.
    • Spearhead robust governance for ethical AI that mitigates risks and increases accountability
    • Lead AI literacy and capacity-building initiatives across stakeholder groups.
    • Explore innovative practices like participatory AI for increased representation and inclusion.
    • Represent the organisation’s AI thought leadership and build strategic AI partnerships.

    Required: minimum requirements include:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a related technical field
    • 3+ years driving successful AI/ML applications in engineering, research or product roles.
    • Expertise in modern AI techniques such as NLP, Multimodal LLMs (such as Meta’s LLaMA), and Python.
    • Proven ability to build and manage high-performing AI teams that deliver cost-effective AI/ML solutions.
    • Understanding of socio-cultural contexts related to AI use cases across Africa.
    • Passion for applying ethical, human-centred AI design to create a positive societal impact.
    • Exceptional communication skills to build trust and AI understanding across stakeholders.

    Preferred: candidates can demonstrate the following will have an advantage:

    • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science or a related technical field.
    • Experience with civic tech tools and platforms, particularly election and media monitoring, transparency and accountability, or data platforms.
    • Experience working with government agencies, civil society organisations (CSOs) or community-based organisations (CBOs) in Africa.
    • Experience with data analysis, visualisation, or storytelling to communicate complex AI/ML concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Knowledge of grant management processes and experience in working with international donors is a plus.

    Device Security Engineer

    Required: minimum requirements include:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, similar technology degrees or 4+ years’ equivalent technology experience,
    • Demonstrable experience supporting high-risk users like journalists and activists.
    • 2+ years experience in security engineering, or a similar role, with a strong focus on Endpoint Security for a diverse range of user devices and small-scale network environments.
    • Experience with security assessment tools and techniques, such as vulnerability scanners, penetration testing frameworks, and forensic analysis tools.
    • Familiarity with scripting languages for security automation (Python, Bash).
    • Deep knowledge of device operating systems (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS) and associated management and security tooling,
    • Passion for using technology to empower and protect civil society organisations,
    • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks, and deliver results within deadlines, 
    • Proven ability to work and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

    Preferred: candidates who can demonstrate the following will have an advantage:

    • Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Security, similar technology degrees or 3+ years’ equivalent experience,
    • Experience in one or more of the following domains is highly desirable: Network Security, Application Security, Cloud Security, and Cryptography,
    • Hold relevant security certifications such as eJPT, Sec+, CEH, CySA, OSCP, and OSCE.
    • Extensive knowledge of computing security issues and threat vectors in the African context, and
    • Experience working with non-profit organisations or in the development sector is a plus.

    About the Role:

    As a Device Security Engineer, you will play a critical role in safeguarding CSOs, CBOs, partners and other stakeholders across the African continent. Reporting to the Digital Security Manager, you conduct thorough security assessments, detect and investigate potential compromises, and implement security best practices for a range of devices and operating systems. Your expertise will empower our partners to operate securely and confidently in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

    Responsibilities: Your daily tasks will include:

    • Conduct comprehensive security assessments of different devices, including but not limited to mobile, and end-user computing devices,
    • Detect signs of compromise (malware, rootkits, unauthorised access) and conduct forensic investigations,
    • Securely wipe/reset compromised devices and extract relevant forensic data,
    • Design and maintain secure device configurations, hardening and usage best practices,
    • Test devices, apps and software for potential vulnerabilities before deployment,
    • Develop and deliver training programs to educate CSOs and CBOs on device security best practices,
    • Stay abreast of emerging device security threats and vulnerabilities, and proactively implement countermeasures, and
    • Collaborate with the security team and other stakeholders to ensure the overall security of devices used by partner organisations.

    Digital Security Manager

    Required: minimum requirements include:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, similar technology degrees or 8+ years’ equivalent technology experience,
    • 1+ years experience in security management or a similar technical leadership role,
    • 3+ years of experience in information security, with a strong focus on Endpoint Security for a diverse range of user devices and small-scale network environments. Additional experience in one or more of the following domains is highly desirable: Network Security, Application Security, Cloud Security, and Cryptography.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing security solutions, including vulnerability management, incident response, and risk mitigation strategies,
    • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks, and deliver results within deadlines, and
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse stakeholders.

    Preferred: candidates who can demonstrate the following will have an advantage:

    • Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Security, similar technology degrees or 6+ years equivalent experience,
    • Relevant security certifications such as ISO27001, CCISO, CISM, CISSP, etc.
    • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a passion for fostering collaboration and individual growth
    • Familiarity with scripting languages for security automation (Python, Bash),
    • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and their security controls is a plus, and
    • Experience working with non-profit organisations or in the development sector is a plus.

    About the Role:

    • Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote a more secure and resilient digital environment for CSOs and CBOs in Africa.
    • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including CSOs and CBOs.
