    Research Assistants, Mortuary Study (12 Positions)

    Global Programs for Research and Training is registered as an international NGO in Kenya, wholly owned and affiliated to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
    The Ministry of Health – National AIDS & STI Control Program (NASCOP) and University of California San Francisco–Global Programs, and Centers for Disease Control are implementing Sentinel Surveillance of HIV Associated Mortality at selected mortuaries in Kenya. The main objective is to establish a mortuary-based sentinel surveillance system for HIV in Kenya. Specifically, the surveillance seeks to determine HIV-positivity among cadavers at sampled mortuaries using minimally invasive OraQuick, monitor the burden and trends in HIV-associated mortality in Kenya and use the surveillance results to calibrate and validate national and subnational estimates of HIV-associated mortality.
    Global Programs for Research and Training is seeking qualified research assistants to be based at the selected sentinel sites. These positions will require three-months commitment.
    The Research Assistants will work under the direct supervision of the study coordinator and overall supervision of the principal investigators.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Attend the full study training to understand the purpose and intent of the study, as well as the plan for implementation.
    • Work in close collaboration with hospital staff in the mortuary to ensure that all eligible cadavers are enrolled into the study
    • Co-ordinate the collection and testing of oral samples from eligible decedents
    • Collect study data from mortuary records into mortuary surveillance data collection tools and electronic databases
    • Uphold data quality procedures.
    • Act as the point of contact to respond to any data quality concerns at the sentinel site
    • Provide routine reports of progress to the study coordinator.
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • The selected research assistant will have the following minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Medical Laboratory, Public Health, or any other health-related field
    • Experience in electronic collection of public health data.
    • Knowledge and understanding of public health issues, specifically regarding HIV/AIDS.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a diverse team
    • Willingness to work in mortuary settings
    • Excellent verbal and written communication.
    • Fluency in English or Swahili.
    • Ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision.

    • Training in bio safety and good clinical practice

    Research Assistants (Data Abstraction), Mortuary Study (6 Positions)

    The Research Assistants (Data Abstraction) will work under the direct supervision of the study coordinator and overall supervision of the principal investigators.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Attend the full study training to understand the purpose and intent of the study, as well as the plan for implementation.
    • Abstraction of data from civil registrar’s records into study electronic HIV surveillance data abstraction forms.
    • Uphold data quality procedures.
    • Ensure data collected is safely transmitted to the designated central location.
    • Act as the point of contact to respond to any data quality concerns related to civil registration data abstraction.
    • Provide routine reports of progress to the study coordinator.
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    The selected research assistant will have the following minimum qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in a social science or health-related field.
    • Experience in collecting quantitative data or abstracting data from existing records in a health-related field.
    • Experience in electronic collection of public health data.
    • Knowledge and understanding of public health issues, specifically regarding HIV/AIDS.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in government offices.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication.
    • Proficiency in using Microsoft office and strong typing skills.
    • Fluency in English or Swahili.
    • Willingness to be based in Kisumu for the duration of the research project.
    • Ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision

    Regional Linux Server Administrator

    The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) through its affiliate international NGO Global Programs for Research and Training (GP) is engaged in several projects in Tanzania, Namibia, Kenya, the Caribbean region, Uganda, and Burundi that are funded by the U.S. Government to provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and its partners. The Health Information Systems (HIS) that are used in these projects need to be deployed, secured, improved, and maintained by a fully qualified and experienced server administrator.
    Under the supervision of the Information, Communication & Technology (ICT) Manager the Regional Linux Server Administrator will be in charge of administering and maintaining the Linux installations for UCSF GSI Projects in Tanzania, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Cambodia, USA and Jamaica.

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Designing and maintaining critical infrastructure for GSI systems. Coordinate with compliance specialists to document, isolate, and resolve any breech in server security.
    • Technical advisory on specific solutions based on requirements for each country server needs.
    • General Linux server administration and management
    • Manage, coordinate, and implement software upgrades, patches, hot fixes on servers.
    • Manage and implement best security practices including encryption on Linux servers.
    • Always be aware of newly discovered server, infrastructural or system vulnerabilities and plan for immediate remedies.
    • Ensure high server availability and continuously review and implement redundancy plans
    • Install software and databases services required on the servers e.g. NGIX, APACHE, TOMCAT, DJANGO, MySQL etc.
    • Manage users, permissions, and secure access to the systems.
    • Proactively monitor system performance, log faults, analyze and resolve performance exceptions and document solutions.
    • Work with HIS developers and other constituents for server capacity planning.
    • Create and modify scripts or applications to perform tasks.
    • Provide input on ways to improve the stability, security, efficiency, and scalability of the server environment.
    • Collaborate with other teams and team members to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.
    • Document and maintain SOPs for server management.
    • Support international projects through close coordination with local teams, on-site travel, and capacity building as needed.
    • Maintain inventory of all server and software installations done for each country and ensure timely upgrades and decommissioning of servers and resources.
    • Assist the ICT manager in maintaining Windows servers, Microsoft SQL servers and Power BI servers.
    • Any other related duties assigned by the supervisor

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education

    • A Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in Computer Science, or a related field with sufficient training in server administration disciplines
    • At least four years of working experience managing multiple Linux servers or a server firm.
    • Demonstrable expertise in securing Linux servers
    • Demonstrable experience in server diagnostics and troubleshooting

    Experience (Required)

    • Industry Linux certification
    • Excellent understanding of Linux Server security
    • Demonstrable experience in managing databases, MySQL, Postgres and MSSQL
    • Demonstrable knowledge in managing Cloud infrastructure for MS Azure and AWS
    • Demonstrable knowledge of understanding Azure and AWS security.
    • Demonstrable knowledge server configuration automation with Ansible

    Abilities

    • Maintain high level of professional ethics
    • Exercise good judgment and seek guidance as appropriate when confronted with unanticipated problem
