    Assistant Librarian – Acquisition & Technical services

    Assistant Librarian – Acquisition & Technical services– Vacancy Code (ALA&TS-23) (1 Position)

    This position will be reporting to the University Librarian.

    Job Purpose:

    The incumbent will be responsible for all acquisition and technical division activities which include selection, acquisition, processing, classification and cataloging of books and other library materials.

    Main Responsibilities:

    • Manage and coordinate all activities and services in the Technical Services Division.
    • Contribute to acquisition, development and collection management efforts, including reviewing potential materials for acquisition and availing current publisher catalogues for selection of books.
    • Recommend the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards and authorities in an automated environment, develop procedures for processing all library materials.
    • Establish policies and procedures for technical services division and revise them periodically as and when necessary.
    • Direct and supervise the operations of the technical services staff and oversee processing of all materials, including receiving book order requests and checking against existing databases to avoid duplications.
    • Classify materials, perform original or copy cataloging for new materials as needed; oversee physical materials processing; update holdings data to reflect material transfer, withdrawal, and additions.
    • Contribute to preparation of annual budget, particularly as it relates to technical services and needs.
    • Maintain statistics and prepare reports related to technical services division as required.
    • Organize information materials to allow easy retrieval which includes shelving and occasional shelve reading.
    • Work for long hours and sometimes in the evenings and weekends.
    • Any other duties as assigned from time to time.

    Requirements: Qualifications and Experience

    • . A Master’s degree in Library Science from a recognized institution with at least 3 years post training experience or equivalent or a Bachelor’s degree with minimum five years’ relevant experience in an academic library or equivalent will also be considered.
    • Sound knowledge of principles and practices of bibliographic maintenance and control including MARC, AACR2, LCSH, LC classification and experience working with KOHA, particularly in classification and cataloging.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Must be proactive, self-driven and goal oriented.
    • Ability to work under minimum supervision.
    • Considerable knowledge of standard library practices, procedures, and technologies
    • Effective organization and problem-solving skills;
    • Strong inter-personal and teamwork skills.
