    Tushinde Children Trust was founded in March 2010. It was set up after Megan Wright, a British woman living in Kenya, visited a project working in the Mathare Slums of Nairobi. The conditions people living in are bad; Shanty towns of thousands of one roomed shacks squashed between poorly built high-rise flats. As many as ten people would live in these huts made of wood, mud and roofed with corrugated iron. No sanitation or legal electricity, and limited access to running water. Babies and children would play in the dirt beside open sewers. Children often had to be abandoned at home whilst their parents or carers went to look for money and food. Megan realised that the challenges keeping some children from school in the informal settlements in Nairobi were the same challenges that some children faced in the UK; a family in crisis after a bereavement or a carer with mental health problems leading to a child being neglected. Yet, here in Mathare there wasnt the safety net of social care and interventions. Megan and the Tushinde team decided to start a family support programme that looked at the whole family to help find lasting solutions.

    Finance intern

    GENERAL MISSION

    • The Finance Intern reports to the Tushinde Children's Trust Finance Assistant (FA).
    • To ensure the smooth running of the Finance department of Tushinde.

    Qualifications and experience

    • Degree in Finance, accounting or relevant course
    • CPA section 4/ ACCA training will be an added advantage
    • Proven experience working in Finance department
    • Fluent written and spoken English and Kiswahili
    • Good understanding of MS Office/ G-Suite
    • Experience in Informal Settlements: Previous experience working with vulnerable families, especially in informal settlements.
    • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
    • Flexibility: Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and a dynamic work environment. Adaptable in a young and growing organisation.
    • A passion for ensuring that every child can enjoy their basic rights.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Carry out archiving and/or filing of supporting documents (ensure logical referencing and easy retrieval of MPESA, Bulk, Procurement documents)
    • Support the sourcing of quotations and reinforcing the procurement policy
    • Maintain and update Finance Folders in Google drive (Folders for allocated duties)
    • Support in closure of monthly accounts
    • Support during internal and external audits.
    • Assist in maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register
    • Uber reconciliation - Follow up with staff to provide uber trips narration
    • Assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures
    • Support the administration of accounts receivable and accounts payables
    • Follow up and ensure there is complete documentation of requisitions from all staff members
    • Update the monthly checklist
    • Support any admin work under Finance docket
    • To perform any other duties requested by the Supervisor and Executive Director, as needed.

    At all times the intern will be expected to:

    • follow the policies and procedures of Tushinde at all times and to be an active contributor to reviews of such.
    • Attend community events and visit Tushinde projects.
    • comply with Tushinde financial procedure and maintain high standards of accountability in the expense of funds (due- time return of receipts etc.)
    • prepare individual weekly and monthly work plans
    • perform any other duties requested by the ED and/or UK ED that are in the best interests of the beneficiaries or programme.
