Social Protection and Cash Based Transfers Intern at World Food Programme (WFP)

JOB PURPOSE

Regional Bureau for Eastern Africa (RBN) is increasingly prioritizing its work in support of national social protection systems, in recognition of their potential to deliver SDG2 results at scale, and as a practical means of delivering across the humanitarian and development nexus. The RBN Social Protection and Cash Based Transfer (SP&CBT) team recognizes the need to better capture regional practices and gain a more holistic understanding of programming in place across the region that contributes to social protection, including nutrition-sensitive social protection.

In many places in the region, Cash Based Transfers (CBT) are implemented on a service provision basis by other actors, including WFP, on behalf of government social protection goals. Other CBT programming is implemented as complementary to government support, furthering and increasing coverage that would otherwise not be possible.

We are seeking to fill the position of Social Protection and Cash Based Transfers Intern based in the Social Protection and Cash Based Transfers Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.

Standard Minimum Qualifications

• Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months’ in the following disciplines: Public Policy, Public Administration, International Development, International Relations, Economics, Sociology, or other relevant areas
• Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree) from a recognized university , undertaking the programmes mentioned above, and have attended classes in the past 12 months,
• Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.
• Training and/or experience utilizing computers including word processing, spreadsheet, and other software packages. Proficiency in Excel and fair knowledge of pivot tables. Office 365 proficiency an added advantage

What You Will Do

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

• Develop and maintain a list of ongoing Social Protection projects in all Country Offices (COs) in the region (as a living document), including thematic area, maturity, lead/ focal, and timeline. Responsibility to maintain and update this document, and provide information to COs from this document where applicable document how social protection is articulated in each CO’s country strategic plans (current and where applicable, drafts), and how these components are funded.
• Document experiences and learning of COs in areas of critical priority to social protection regionally, including CO experiences in shock-responsive social protection, information management systems, engagements/partnerships with International Financial Insititutions, programmes targeting specific groups, and programmes requiring strong cross-functional collaboration with school feeding, nutrition, food systems, and others.
• Support cross-regional learning and experience sharing amongst COs. Support the Social Protection advisor in identifying cross-learning opportunities and provide backstopping support and documentation of learning calls/ meetings between COs, as well as in-person learning visits where applicable.
• Act as the social protection knowledge management (KM) focal, and support the unit KM lead with KM goals and opportunities, including recording and sharing existing and emerging knowledge within the team.
• Other tasks/ support as required.

TRAINING AND LEARNING ELEMENTS

Training components
The intern will work closely with both the social protection advisor and the social protection consultant, and the CBT officers, and will be supported to grow their knowledge and experience in this technical area. Throughout their assignment WFP the intern will also have access to internal learning platforms and may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

Learning elements
At the end of the assignment, the intern would have gained:

• A comprehensive understanding of the social protection concepts and approach which WFP uses in Eastern Africa Region
• Experience and improved their research and analytical skills
• First-hand knowledge of WFP’s experiences and contributions to social protection as well as some of the key challenges and opportunities arising.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas, and related costs.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
• The internship duration is 8 months, full-time
