    Head of Policy

    About the role

    Burn is seeking a Head of Policy & Government Relations to ensure a beneficial Tax regime across the countries in which we operate. The Head of Policy and Government Relations will be responsible for driving organizational success by pushing to establish a beneficial tax regime across Africa.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Establish Key priority markets and map a comprehensive landscape in those markets
    • Engage with the relevant stakeholders in the cookstove business to develop industry policy, legislation, guidelines, and codes of practice.
    • To identify events where BURN can play a leading role and where the company’s visibility would be increased as a market leader
    • To work closely with the Legal and Compliance Department to ensure awareness of new regulations and spearhead engagement with various regulators
    • To work closely with the Product Development/Management team and provide support on regulatory requests promptly
    • Provide timely advisories on bills and newly enacted legislation to the business and formulate a strategic response to the same.
    • To manage regulatory interventions which could affect the organization and ensure that regulators undertake all steps outlined in the law before effecting any changes
    • To recommend best practice methods for regulatory interventions and public policy matters and actively lobby the various stakeholders on the proposed opinion
    • To support the team in monitoring and advising the business on anticipated changes in legislation affecting the energy industries in the future and how these will affect the business
    • To engage and participate actively in industry bodies to ensure a unified approach to common industry concerns for the benefit of BURN.

    Skills and Experience:

    • 5+ years of experience working with governments on behalf of organizations or policy initiatives.
    • Significant experience working in international development or related industries, ideally in work that touches on the private sector or social enterprises.
    • Demonstrated experience in managing large, multi-country teams with varied professional development needs.
    • Energy and flexibility - show a passion for this work and thrive in fast-changing management and government environments.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple country offices and departments.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

    Tooling Engineer

    About Role

    BURN is currently seeking a mission-driven Tooling Engineer for its modern clean cookstove manufacturing facility in Ruiru, Nairobi.

    Roles and responsibilities

    • Design, analyze, and cost the required sheet metal soft and production tools for new products.
    • Lead design iteration of jigs and fixtures for new products.
    • Work closely with the machinists to ensure successful machining and cutting operations for all the tool parts.
    • Supervise tool assembly and tool validation activities.
    • Helping in managing the tooling workshop’s materials and hardware warehouse.
    • Work closely with the product design team to ensure design for manufacturability.
    • Carry out all assigned tasks in outsourced tooling projects and machining projects.
    • Help in training tooling technicians and machinists on the best practices in sheet metal tooling design, machining, and building and maintenance activities.
    • Participate in root cause analysis sessions for tools breakdowns.
    • Help in achieving efficient utilization of the workshop’s machines.
    • Ensure conformity with the company’s SOPs and help improve the tooling workshop procedures

    Skills and Experience

    • Excellent problem identifier and solver.
    • Hands-on and action-oriented.
    • Excellent communicator that works well in a team.
    • Detail-oriented and well organized.
    • 3 to 5 years of experience in developing and building sheet metal production tools.
    • Experience in designing and building sheet metal Deep drawing, and forming tools is preferred.
    • Excellent SolidWorks skills. Other 3D modeling software experience is a plus.
    • Capable of using Logo-Press, Auto-Form, or any other tooling analysis software.
    • Experience in working with EDM drilling, EDM wire cutting, and EDM spark erosion machines.
    • Good understanding of cold working tooling materials and heat treatment of tool steels.
    • Perfect understanding of hydraulic and mechanical forming and punching presses.
    • Very Good understanding of machining and tools clearances, tolerances, allowances, and engineering drawings.
    • Very good project management skills.
    • A good understanding of CNC milling, turning operations, and conventional machine shop tools is a plus.

    Product Design Engineer

    About the Role:

    Burn is looking for a Product Design Engineer for its new electric cooking products. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the development of a new electric cooking product for Africa. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of user-centered product design. They will use market and user research to inform their designs. Working closely with the electrical and software design teams will ensure the optimal design solution. Additionally, they will collaborate with the commercial team to identify business needs and incorporate them into the product requirements. As Product Design Engineers, they will need to have strong visual communication skills that are grounded in a solid understanding of manufacturing processes.

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Create and present visual concepts for new and innovative electric cooking products using a variety of visual communication methods such as sketches, digital illustrations, CAD, CAD renderings, and rapid prototypes.
    • Design and create low to high-fidelity prototypes using formed sheet metal, CNC milled, and 3D printed parts.
    • Create 2D technical drawings for communication with vendors.
    • Follow human-centered design practices when developing designs.
    • Ensure all designs are consistent with Burn’s style and branding strategy.
    • Provide inputs and initiate research activities to resolve and support design decisions.
    • Research and develop manufacturing processes as needed to achieve product goals.
    • Contribute to the creation of related digital products to ensure consistent user experience across products.
    • Creating and maintaining requirement documents, reports, cost studies, part, and process specification documentation.
    • Communicating with the respective stakeholders such as hardware and software about the project and their task herein.
    • Prototyping using sheet metal forming, welding, general metal fabrication, 3d printing, and others
    • Testing concepts and prototypes in the lab and field

    Skills and Experience:

    • BFA or BA in Design Engineering, Industrial Design, Product Design, or similar fields.
    • 3 +year demonstrated work experience in relevant consumer product field designing products.
    • Proficient in Rhino, SolidWorks, Keyshot, and Adobe CC (Mostly Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign).
    • Proficient in core MS Office products.
    • Solid sketching and rapid visual communication skills.
    • A portfolio of current work. Candidates will be required to present work samples and or portfolio to demonstrate communication skills as well as their design skills.
    • Hand prototyping and model-making skills such as basic metalworking, sheet metal, wood, foam, 3D print finishing, and painting.
    • Experience in UX and UI design, Adobe XD or Figma
    • Graphic design for products.
    • Integration of electrical hardware into products.
