    Youth Activities Cordinator

    Task description

    • Under the direct supervision of the Child Protection Officer, and the overall guidance from the Senior Protection Officer the Refugee UN Volunteer will be assigned protection-related youth activities in line with UNHCR’s 2019-2022 National Youth Strategy under the guidance of UNHCR Protection covering Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement and in close coordination with relevant sector focal points (e.g., education, livelihood).

    The UN volunteer is expected to share an equal amount of time in the field and in the office for the duties will involve field activities and reporting on the field activities. The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

    • Conduct a stock-taking exercise of the effectiveness of current youth programmes and programmatic gaps in close collaboration with UNHCR and partners; make recommendations with regard to enhancing youth programming.
    • Provide support to the roll-out of special projects related to youth, including the Youth Initiative Fund (Dadaab and Nairobi) and other new initiatives in the operation.
    • Organise Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) twice per month with youth to identify pressing issues (for example in relation to documentation, service delivery, radicalization, secondary migration, feedback from young mothers on education needs, etc), draft report and propose way forward.
    • Assist with the implementation of a Youth Working Group, arrange monthly meetings and draft minutes.
    • Submit monthly reports of activities which will be used at Nairobi level to produce a monthly “YouthSnapshot Report”.

    Requirements

    Required experience

    • 3 years of experience in relevant field required.
    • Familiarity with programming.

    • Good interpersonal skills he/she must be able to relate well with others, dictate responsibilities, offer support and constructive feedback.
    • Computer skills: good knowledge and skill with basic computer applications (Word, Excel, Internet).
    • Fluent in English will be desirable.
    • Should be at least 22 years of age at the time of applying.
    •  A recognised refugee living in Kakuma camp or Kalobeyei settlement.
    • Basic knowledge or familiar with UNHCR mandate.

    Driver

    • The Driver in the UNHCR Office is normally supervised directly by the Administrative Officer/Associate/Assistant or another staff member when the scale of the Operation so require it. Besides driving, the incumbent is responsible for up keep and maintenance of the assigned UNHCR vehicle(s) as per technical guidance and specifications established by the Organisation. S/he is required to follow strict instructions and security guidance provided by the supervisor. While the basic function of a driver is to drive the official vehicles of UNHCR, s/he may be called upon to perform minor maintenance and repair of UNHCR vehicles.
    • The Driver has regular contacts with staff within the UNHCR Office and with others (including Partners, government authorities, etc.) outside UNHCR involving a limited exchange of information.
    • All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within their delegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. In addition, staff members are required to discharge their responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core, functional, cross-functional and managerial competencies and UNHCR¿s core values of professionalism, integrity and respect for diversity.

    Duties

    • Drive UNHCR vehicles for the transport of authorized passengers, deliver, and collect documents and other items.
    • Meet official personnel at airports or other locations and facilitate immigration and customs formalities as required.
    • Perform day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles; check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc. and ensure that the assigned UNHCR vehicles are road or waterway worthy and maintained up to the established security standards.
    • Perform minor repairs, arrange for other repairs, and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean.
    • Ensure that the steps required by rules and regulations, or other local procedures, are taken in case of involvement in an accident.
    • Log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing, etc.
    • Ensure that instructions and security guidance provided by the supervisor and security focal point are strictly followed.
    • Ensures valid documentation for passengers, items or cargo in vehicle.
    • Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks, issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
    • Perform other related duties as required.

    Nature of Position:

    • UNHCR Sub-Office Kakuma covers the Kakuma refugee camp, Kalobeyei integrated settlement and Field Unit Lodwar. The Kakuma refugee camp has been in existence for some 30 years and currently accommodates significant protracted refugee populations with continued influx from mainly South Sudan and Burundi.  The Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement host some 223,000 refugees from 19 different countries. In line with the GCR and the MYMP Strategy, Kakuma operation focuses its strategy on further expanding the protection of refugees and promoting solutions. In close collaboration with the government of Kenya, UN Agencies including the WB/IFC and NGOs, the operation in Kakuma developed a major initiative – Kalobeyei integrated Socio-Economic Plan (KISEDP), which represents the main vehicle for operationalizing GCR in Kenya.
    • UNHCR Field Unit has been established to enhance coordination between UNHCR SO Kakuma and the Turkana County Government with regards to the aforementioned responsibilities and activities geared towards protecting and supporting refugees based in Kakuma Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement. 
    • The main responsibility is to safely transport either authorized cargo or passengers from one location to another.     Senior Reporting Assistant

    • The Senior Reporting Assistant will fulfil internal and external reporting requests. The incumbent is supervised by the Reporting Officer or another professional or more senior local staff depending on the staffing structure of the Office.
    • The Senior Reporting Assistant is expected to have contacts within the Organization and outside the duty station, as well as with partners and other stakeholders to collect information and monitor programme activities.

    • The incumbent will be supervised by the External Relations Associate based in Support Office Nairobi. The incumbent will be working closely with the Executive Office, Program and Protection Units based in the Representation Office in Mogadishu. The incumbent is expected to have sound proposal writing skills, reporting skills, donor relations knowledge and understanding of how to address internal, external donors and other stakeholders. The incumbent should exhibit strategic thinking, innovation, proactivity, strong teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Prior experience in reporting and donor relations will be prioritized during the selection process.
    • The incumbent should possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with a demonstrated ability to create reports for various donor entities, including both institutional and private donors. A thorough understanding of UNHCR's brand, particularly concerning its protection and solution mandate, as well as fundraising and donor relations with both institutional and private donors, is essential. Additionally, the incumbent should excel in identifying opportunities to showcase UNHCR's contributions within a development framework.
    • A minimum of three years of proven experience in related roles involving reporting on program implementation and outcomes is highly desired. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, native-level proficiency in verbal and written English, and experience in producing reports under tight deadlines are essential qualifications.
    • The candidate should possess prior experience working with international development and or humanitarian organizations, Previous experience with UNHCR/UN is an added advantage. He/ She should possess a solid understanding of reporting protocols, best practices, guidelines, and communication tools. He/ She should demonstrate resourcefulness in utilizing technology, conducting research, and effectively managing a substantial workload with minimal supervision. Possession of strong interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team and multicultural environment is desirable.
