    Vulnerability, Assessment & Mapping Intern

     

    JOB PURPOSE

    The Research, Assessment and Monitoring unit serves WFP with the expertise in the areas of Monitoring & Evaluation, Vulnerability Analysis & Mapping. We have the corporate knowledge on the related processes and we provide the guidance to Country Offices on application of methodologies, tools and processes on a daily basis.

    We are seeking to fill the position of Vulnerability, Assessment & Mapping Intern based in Research, Assessment and Monitoring Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.

    The intern will be trained to fill the gaps and produce a web-based visualization of market prices for all the RBN countries.

    Standard Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in the university and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies; currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master's degree) from a recognized university; or have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme within the last 6 months, preferably in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, IT/ computer Science, Software Engineering, data sciences, Data Visualization, Economics or other closely relevant field or equivalent.
    • Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree) from a recognized university, undertaking the programmes mentioned above, and have attended classes in the past 12 months.
    • Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French, would be an asset.
    • Training and/or experience utilizing computers including word processing, spreadsheet, and other software packages.
    • Extremely proficient in online dashboard platforms and data visualization tools, including R, Stata, Tableau, and SPSS, R, BI
    • Working knowledge of basic statistics, databases, data mining and analytics

    Desired Experiences For Entry Into The Role

    • Basic knowledge on GIS
    • Knowledge in survey methodologies/basic tenets in survey processes (design, development of questionnaires, conducting data collection)
    • Skills in literature search/secondary data review
    • Experience in database management, digital/ web-based interactive analytical applications, visualizations, tableau etc
    • Experience working in the food security/ humanitarian sector is an advantage, but not prerequisite
    • Working knowledge of basic statistics, databases, data mining and analytics.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, including basic analysis and report writing skills.

    What You Will Do

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

    • Making use of in-house learning opportunity from the VAM/M&E team, and developing the regional food security dashboard using Tableau;
    • Learning from WFP online courses (We-learn) on the basics of food security, and updating the food security and nutrition database including populations in need of assistance, also in collaboration with the Nutrition unit;
    • Learning mVAM basics and assist in developing of systems and tools for mVAM monitoring and support country offices in roll-out and conducting mVAM;
    • Update the data for the regional Atlas and prepare data for the web-based application;
    • Learning integrated food security phase classification (IPC) and compile IPC dataset to determine populations in need;
    • Document lessons learnt in food security monitoring and success stories.

    TERMS AND CONDITIONS

    • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP depending on the duty station of assignment (i.e. Nairobi).
    • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas, and related costs.
    • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
    • The internship duration is 8 months, full-time
