    Software Developer in the Infrastructure Team

    About the role

    The Software Developer is a Product Team member in the Infrastructure team. You will engineer, manage, and maintain our hosting platform and infrastructure, allowing secure and scalable hosting. You’ll also be central to the future development of our infrastructure services and support both internal teams and external partners. You will work with sys admins, DevOps engineers, and users of the CHT directly – this includes building new features, ensuring support, fixing bugs, testing applications, and ensuring we're working on the most impactful things. You will work with a distributed team based around the world, and you will report to an Engineering Manager.

    • Develop software - Contribute to our codebase, write and review code. Follow our development workflow and coding style. We use JavaScript, NodeJS, CouchDB, Docker, AWS, Kubernetes, Bash, and k3s as our primary stack. We are looking for someone with experience with these or similar technologies. 
    • Support scaling - Proactively seek new technologies or implementations that solve current problems better or more efficiently
    • Troubleshooting - Prioritize and provide remote troubleshooting support to active deployments as needed.
    • Documentation - Write technical information, explain processes, clarify interactions when requested, and ensure proper documentation.
    • Mentorship - Support junior team members. 
    • Support shifts - Work in dedicated support tasks (not on-call) once every 4 weeks, primarily assisting other internal teams or external partners.

    Skills Knowledge and Expertise

    Required Skills and Qualifications

    • 3 years of experience with software development, with concrete results
    • Experience in one or more programming languages
    • Fluent in English and experience using it in a remote work environment, e.g., over video and text chats
    • Knowledge of software development processes
    • Good understanding of DevOps concepts and best practices
    • Ability to work in a remote and culturally diverse team
    • You must have valid authorization to work in the country that you are based without requiring sponsorship.

    Communications Manager

    We are seeking an expert creative writer and tech-savvy communications professional with strong organizational and relationship-building skills to join our External Affairs team as our Communication Manager. This position reports to the Senior Manager of External Affairs and will work closely with the Chief Development Officer, Philanthropy Manager, External Affairs Officer, and other interdepartmental teammates living and working in 20+ countries around the world. Communications at Medic is highly collaborative during ideation and brainstorming phases, with execution of strategy and deliverables owned by the Communications Manager.

    Position Information:

    • Employment Status: Full-time 
    • Location: GMT 00:00 to GMT -06:00 time zones, permanently remote unless based in a Medic hub location (Nairobi, Dakar, Kampala, Kathmandu)
    • If located in North or South America, must be willing and available for occasional meetings as early as 6am and as late as 6pm EST
    • Preferred Start Date: Oct 1 2023
       

    Key Responsibilities

    The Communications Manager will have ultimate responsibility for each of these bodies of work, but will work collaboratively across the External Affairs team for input and execution. They will also have the opportunity to hire an additional teammate by Q1’24, already budget-approved.

     

    Strategy and Brand - 20%

    • Conceptualize, develop, and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance Medic’s mission, goals, and initiatives; broaden awareness of its priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences, using metrics to support success or needing to redirect strategies.
    • Identify and suggest thought leadership opportunities for Medic key opinion leaders including op-eds, speaking opportunities, coalition engagement.
    • Build internal fluency with key talking points, and position statements, in line with the needs of multiple stakeholders and audiences.
    • Coordinate with global teammates to ensure content and collateral is available in regional languages for targeted audiences.
    • Advise the Director of Community to ensure consistent messaging, branding and voice across all platforms. (Balancing Medic as an organization and the Community Health Toolkit as the product we build with the global community.)
    • Collaborate with Philanthropy colleagues to identify strategic communications opportunities that overlap with fundraising goals, needs, and focus areas.
    • Lead organization-wide brand management efforts, including implementation of recently refreshed branding.

    High-Quality Content Creation - 50%

    • Create appropriate, highly-visual and impactful content and collateral for external audiences in line with Medic’s brand and voice.
    • Serve as lead writer and editor on the following deliverables:
      • Quarterly reports: published January, April, July, October
      • Annual report: published in April/May
      • Monthly blog(s), supporting diverse representation and voices of Medic teammates who co-write as thought partners
      • Ad-hoc press releases
      • Weekly social media
      • Mailchimp-based emails to support launch of all major communications
      • Organization 1-pagers and deck templates with Medic branding

    Website, Social Media - 10%

    • Develop and implement a powerful social media plan and calendar across multiple brand outposts (X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, blog and other developing social media channels) and own content creation for these outposts.
    • Maintain and manage Medic’s Wordpress website, regular maintenance as well as monitoring and escalating identified issues or improvements.
    • Create simple designs in Canva and support stylization of Mailchimp emails.

    Media / PR, Conference and Event Planning - 5% 

    • Respond to media inquiries or requests for organizational information/assets.
    • Support abstract collection and conference preparation activities for 2-3 major global events/conferences per year (e.g. preparing teammates with ‘Medic 101’ talking points, social media posting to announce event attendance, reviewing recorded sessions for quote opportunities, general branding collateral – business cards, banners, posters, 1-pagers, etc.) 
    • Subscribe to relevant newsletters and listservs, stay informed on developments in community and digital health and share relevant updates with the team.

    HR - 5%

    • Supervise 1 FTE, to be hired late 2023 or Q1 2024
    • Manage 1 contracted designer/illustrator (in 2024, after onboarding period)

    Knowledge and Asset Management - 10%

    • Follow conversations across email and Slack, flagging critical moments to be included in reports, blog, social media, etc. and collaborate with global teammates to explore these stories with critical details, quotes, photos, etc.
    • Manage intranet pages and Google drive folders

    Skills Knowledge and Expertise

    • A Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent supplementary experience required
    • Fluency in English and French required.
    • 5 years of experience in communications, journalism, public relations or related domains, with significant preference for global health and/or technology nonprofit context.
    • Superb verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, accurately, and concisely.
    • Ability to set priorities; coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and meet firm deadlines while gracefully balancing changing needs.
    • Demonstrated ability to work well remotely, under pressure, and with limited supervision but with high accuracy, purpose, and impact.
