    In-House Legal Counsel

    Job Profile 

    • Anjarwalla & Khanna (ALN Kenya) and its affiliates are visionary professional services firms. The role will support A&K and its affiliates and report to the General Counsel. 

    Roles and Responsibilities 

    • Act as the in-house legal counsel in A&K and its affiliates, including: 
    • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other legal documents on behalf of A&K and its affiliates, including: (a) regular vendor/commercial contracts; (b) client-facing terms of engagement; and (c) any other agreements. 
    • Develop standard templates for regularly used in-house contract templates. 
    • Together with the General Counsel, identify and manage legal risks associated with the firm's operations and develop strategies to mitigate those risks. 
    • Liaise with stakeholders to develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and professional ethics requirements (including data protection, anti-money laundering compliance and other internal policies and programmes). 
    • Provide legal support to special projects and initiatives as assigned by firm leadership.
    • Support the firm’s knowledge management and learning and development department, including: 
    • Together with the Learning & Development team and Partners/practice heads, plan and deliver training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events to share best practices, new legal developments, and firm policies.  Stay up to date on legal developments and industry trends relevant to the firm's practice areas. 
    • Undertake in-depth legal research and analysis on complex and novel legal issues using various tools and databases to deliver quality tailored legal research and analysis to assist the firm's lawyers and clients in different practice areas. 
    • Work with client-facing teams to identify and extract valuable insights from previous cases, transactions, and client matters. 
    • Assisting in developing and improving standard templates for contracts, advise memos and other legal templates. 
    • Undertake regular audits and evaluations to measure the performance of knowledge management processes and find areas for improvement. 
    • Share information with the relevant teams and encourage a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration within the firm and its affiliates by creating communication channels and platforms for staff to exchange insights, ideas, and expertise. 
    • Communicate with external experts, regulators, and industry associations and monitor and report on relevant legal developments, trends, and news in the local and global markets to obtain and share insights and information. 
    • Assisting the General Counsel and Partners in facilitating, building and sustaining a relationship with key stakeholders such as the Law Society of Kenya, AG’s Chambers, the National Assembly Clerks, Government Printers and those responsible for legislative drafting as required. 

    Experience and personal qualities

    The following experience is preferred: 

    • Law degree from a reputable institution. 
    • 4 – 7 years post-qualification experience in a mid-sized law firm or a busy in-house practice (experience in corporate or commercial law will be an added advantage). 
    • Great grasp of Kenyan law. 
    • Familiar with electronic research and legal research using various tools and platforms. 
    • Experience in a compliance role will be an added advantage.

    • The role will be based in Nairobi, Kenya with potential to travel within our regional offices.

    Learning and Development Manager

    • We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Learning and Development Manager to join our team. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and evaluating innovative learning and development initiatives for our client-facing and business services professionals. 
    • The Learning and Development Manager is responsible for managing the A&K and its affiliate’s learning program to inculcate a learning culture and ensure that the staff is trained through internal and external training programs. 
    • The role will support A&K and its affiliates and report to the Head of Knowledge Management.

    Roles and Responsibilities 

    In more detail, the core areas of responsibility include: 

    • Designing and delivering cutting-edge learning programs that equip our people with the skills and knowledge to excel at every stage of their careers. 
    • Working closely with the leadership to foster a culture of continuous improvement through learning whilst focussing on performance outcomes. 
    • Working closely with the Partners, Heads of Departments and the People & Culture department to identify learning and development needs and priorities and thereafter design, develop and implement a learning and development framework. 
    • Work closely with the wider African Legal Network (ALN) to disseminate training and share best practice across our alliance of law firms in Africa. 
    • Staying abreast of global legal industry learning and development trends and incorporating innovative learning approaches to trainings. 
    • Utilizing data and analytics to measure the effectiveness of learning programs and ensure a strong return on the L&D investment. 
    • Working closely with the ALN Academy for relevant trainings and knowledge management initiatives as required from time to time. ALN Academy is a charity affiliated to A&K, established to promote the rule of law in Africa by providing capacity building and quality legal training for governments, private practitioners and students. 
    • Foster a culture of continuous learning and self-improvement by promoting and facilitating internal and external learning opportunities.

    Experience and personal qualities 

    • This role will require an experienced learning and development professional with the highest levels of commitment. Our ideal candidate is a dedicated hard worker looking to join an experienced team supporting a multi-disciplinary organisation with extended geographical reach. 

    The following experience is preferred: 

    • Bachelor's degree in Education, Human Resources, Law, or a related field. 
    • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in a dynamic learning and development department preferably within a dynamic professional services environment or consulting firm. 
    • Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, and training delivery techniques. 
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative and engaging learning solutions.

    • Ability to learn quickly in a highly dynamic and fast-moving environment.
